    Cafe Racer

I consider it hideous, but yet I can't look away.

    Cool Re: Cafe Racer

It's like the Mona Lisa... no matter where you go, her eyes are following you.

    Re: Cafe Racer

I saw that posted on Motorcycle Daily. I don't really consider it a cafe racer. Cafe racers typically were not fully faired. And I am not at all a fan of the two headlights poking out of the fairing. It would look much better if they were frenched in, or better yet if the bike had a single headlight. Sticking out like that, those headlights remind me of:

CB750s can make awesome cafe racers, but I prefer them when they look more like this:

    Re: Cafe Racer

i'd say it's more of a endurance racer style circa 1985, not so much a cafe racer.

what ever you call it i think it's hot. even the function over form look of the lights.

    Re: Cafe Racer

Ok that's interesting but odd. Not really a cafe racer though... cafe racers are supposed to be really stripped down and minimalist.

CB750's do make a good (but perhaps a bit boring) platform but I just recently learned that the Yamaha Virago makes a really cool cafe bike. The stock machine is about the ugliest bike in world history but when you remove all the cruiser crap you realize it has a layout very much like an old Vincent, with a stressed engine and an old fashioned single shock swingarm:

Here is a Yamaha RD350 cafe racer that I built... Also did a CB400f, and have plans on doing a cb750 or RD400 this winter.

That's nicely executed and thoroughly appeals to me. Wish I had time for another hobby, this cafe bike scene looks like a fun way to spend a little money and kill a lot of time.

Being pragmatic at heart makes motorcycles in general a tough sell to my conscience, but the minimalist concept of cafe bikes and the obvious low cost/DIY aspect totally appeals to both the biker and the pragmatist in me. Maybe when I retire, I'll learn to weld better, buy an English wheel and a planishing hammer; and start making one-off frames and tanks for bikes that were never intended to be sporty.
