I can't get my 'effing drain plug loose...

Ok, this is embarrassing, but I'm finally gonna ask for help after my umpteenth unsuccessful try at doing this darn oil change...

Yet again, lying under the bike this morning on the street, and still can't get the darn drain plug loose. Was cranking on it so hard I almost pulled the bike over on top of me...

Any male brawn in Bawston wanna flex those muscles? :

    Kick it.

Seriously you need a longer wrench to get more torque on it. (breaker bar)

And a set of 6-point, 1/2" drive sockets if you don't have them already (make sure whatever size you need for the drain bolt is included).

If the breaker bar isn't enough length, get a 4-5' piece of pipe that will fit over the breaker bar. Aluminum lacrosse stick handles will work in a pinch, but might damage the handle in the process.

Rather than trying to brute force it... get out your favorite hammer. Hit the plug from the bottom a few times to help relieve the stress that's built up on it. Yes, I'm dead serious, hit it with a hammer. Then, get your ratchet on it, and play 'impact driver' by hitting the handle with your hand in the direction you want it to turn. You'll get a higher peak impulse of torque on the bolt, and hopefully that combined with the initial hammer session will be enough that it'll loosen up for you.

Are you going in the correct direction. Counter-clockwise. It can be confusing upside down. When you retighten it you could use a new crush washer and a torque wrench.

Re: I can't get my 'effing drain plug loose...

Alex, I know you have a hammer and like to use it...

I will check my useless local hardware store and see if they have a breaker bar. It is doubtful based on past experiences... apparently all you need in Boston are tools for hanging pictures on the wall, so that is what they stock. Got the sockets and a new crush washer...

Will try using a hammer, and swearing at it profusely...

Wish I had a torque wrench but those are spendy

    Animal? You know it...lol. :

Are you trying to get it loose with the engine cold? If you take it for a good blast and get the motor hot, that should also help you out!

If you do this, keep in mind that hot bolts will strip very easily.

If you are talking about the head of the bolt, that is why she needs to use a 6 point. If you are talking about the threads, I have never heard of this one...
Heat is always a nice way to get bolts loose.

Ok...so a 3 foot metal pipe did the trick... No crush washer in sight... When I put in a new one..which side up? There is a flat side, and a rounded side with an indent along the circumference...

Wham bam thank you ma'am she's done....

Oh, and Sheppo says split side up on the crush washer

But... I couldn't replace that because the old one is stuck to the plug.
Hopefully this will fix the cranky shifting, having to wiggle it into 3rd gear problem I was experiencing on the ride yesterday...
