    $$$ carbs cleaned/adjust

    have a friends 98 zx9r with 40,000 miles...

bike stalls when at idle and not revving, only runs with choke fully open.
Can ride around short distance, but keep throttle open at stop signals.

just changed 4 spark plugs, and added sea foam to tank, and little spray carb cleaner to intake....

.... still no go, must need a full removal carb cleaning & adjustment

anyone know the best place for service, and an estimate cost it should be
    $200-$300-$400 ....

trying to figure out if more $$$ service is needed than worth of bike, may be better off selling???

closest dealer to me is Brockton Cycle

    thanks

Sounds like what my 92 zr750 was doing last year before I had the carbs rebuilt. Cleared it right up. Cost was ~$300, but I had it done in upstate NY and labor was only $55 an hour. Next time I'm going to try it myself.

I would grab a manual and try it yourself. It really is quite simple once you do it once. I'd help you out if you were a little closer.

I would charge your friend $200 and do it for him, unless you're nice you could do it for $150, it's really not that hard of work.

    Re: $$$ carbs cleaned/adjust

If you/he are close to me, bring it buy and i will clean them. I have had enought forum members do me favors i owe the forum a couple. It needs a rebuild thats a diffrent story... But the bike is new enough to where a cleaning should do the trick.

I'm in exeter, NH. If you are looking for a professional place i would recomend staying away from dealerships, they will kill ya every time.

    thanks for replies...

can someone explain how do you know the difference between whether the carbs need cleaning/soaking etc vs. carb rebuild???

....what is actually involved in a carb rebuild
(are new carbs installed replacing old ones)???

    thanks

Cleaning is just that, cleaning and reinstalling the origional parts. A rebiold involves repalcing most of the internal parts. Jets, floats, float valves, gaskets, ect...

    Re: $$$ carbs cleaned/adjust

What you are describing happened to my 2003 ZZR1200 last year. The only fix was to manually clean the pilot jets. I cleaned all of them though. The thought of pulling apart and getting to them is scarier than actually doing them. Take the offer from the forum members who can do it...$200 - $300 is a small price to pay to get the bike back.

There is alot of debate out there; but the general consensus is that the ethanol in the gas is gumming up the jets. I can attest to something gumming them up; I had to take a small wire to each jet. In two of the cases, the wire would not go through. I had to boil each jet first, and then work the wire. When all was said and done, the bike ran perfectly!!

    Good luck!
