I didn't change my own tires in MA, but here each city has a free tire recycling program (in limited quantities). I've also asked tire shops if they don't mind recycling them for me, but I'm usually paying them to put tires on one of my cars so maybe they're doing it to be nice and encourage the sale.

Speaking of going through lots of rubber, does anyone have a tip on cheap tire disposal? I have a trackbed worth to get rid of, but at 20 per tire, my local dump is a bit steep.

Cheapest tire disposal I’ve found, is using them for brush fire starters on wet or snowy days. While not environmentally friendly, it makes it easy to burn brush when it’s permitted

With your tire habit you might as well start building a retaining wall

It would look like Mogadishu circa 2000 around here if I went that route!

Ended up getting a Tusk stand as well as a no pinch tool setup that came with three spoons.

The guy I know who installs (his own regularly and mine, once) spiked tires around here softens the tires up near the wood stove first

DUDE! The No-Pinch tool works INCREDIBLY well. Removing still sucks, but installing tires is downright easy!!!!

Got em on! The combo of the stand, the no pinch tool, new spoons, the bead buddy, and the valvestem fish make it a lot easier, thanks for all the suggestions everyone!!!

If you’re not doing much/any street riding, -1/+3 is a common mod for woods riding. Biggest difference I like about it is 2nd gear is much smoother/less jerky than 1st when in the tight stuff. After changing the gearing on the 450FX, I don’t even use 1st anymore.
I’d say I’m jealous of riding with spike tires on snow, but we still have bear ground here, riding is surprisingly good for this time of year

    Congrats

It should get easier each time! Plus with your crazy schedule, it’s more efficient to DIY instead of driving over and coordinating with a shop.

I am also jealous of the studded tires on snowy trails; that looks so fun!

I almost did the winter wick a couple times, but never had the set up. Good luck.

My era 500EXC came stock with 15-45 gearing which was way too fast in the woods. We're talking about 6mph at idle in first gear and a theoretical top end of 105-110mph in 6th. I dropped it to 14-48 (-1,+3) which was as far as I could with the stock chain and it made a huge difference in rideability on single track while still having more than enough top end speed on the road without abusing the engine.

Yup, you will be middle of 2nd on tight hill climbs instead of revving out 1st…or starting hills in 3rd so you can still downshift to 2nd if you need to

Got the tire back on. My friends rode a couple miles back to my house and got the no pinch tool. Not really sure what happened?

    This is awesome

In a sick, but somewhat twisted and fun way, this when my friend says “now the adventure starts!”

Cold fingers pushing a tube sounds painful

So tire fell off the bead?

Tire pressure too low? That’s my guess if I can see “rolls” in the tube

    Did you set the bead?

After you mount the tire, you put in an extra air pressure over the normal to “set the bead”. It mates the bead of the tire evenly around the rim. High pressure is what sets it; then bleed down to your riding pressure. To establish if the bead was set you just do a visual inspection of the tire after it’s aired up. If it’s not set, bounce the tire on pavement and put in more air.

Still jealous over here. That still looks fun to me; wish I was with you.

I didn't seat the bead well enough I don't think. It was about 30 degrees out and 5 miles from home, but in pretty mountainous terrain.

Funny you say "this is where the adventure starts", as we were on our knees in the snow with the bike on a log my friend says, "i think were ready for erzberg now!"

    Blizzardcross is February 19th!

I think we have a lake day in the near future...
