I'm thinking about getting this helmet. this guy is selling a bunch of them on ebay. it's only $69.95, which seems like a really really good price for a shoei. Plus, i think it would look good with my f4i. any comments or opinions? anyone heard of this model? cuz i haven't!!

they are snell m85? isn't that from like 1985... as in... are they even street legal in MA?
i looked for info on DOT 218 and everything i found was dated 1988.

i think this guy found a stash in a pile of dust from some old closed down factory he just bought so he could make widgets.

yeah, but again, it's cheap cuz it's OUTDATED... and i don't mean just the color... i'm talkin about the safety certification. I'm all for savin a few bucks but those helmets are old & may not even be street legal anymore, i dunno... i'd have to look into the most recent helmet laws.

i'd much rather buy something current that's safer, lighter & more comfortable. DOT 218, Snell-M2000 certifications required for my noggin

Don't try to use that helmet for a track day, to old. Remember seeing the one you bought at least 10 -12 years ago.

That is a SERIOUSLY outdated helmet, that won't offer you nearly the protection of a modern, up to date helmet. Probably about as safe as a bicycle helmet....

Snell M85 is a standard they don't even list any more on the Snell site (www.smf.org). Just by looking at the color schemes he has available tells you they're about 15-20 years old...

A good tech inspector wouldn't even let it out on a track day, and he'd be justified in his decision...

The last helmet I crashed with was Snell 90-something, and it CRACKED in TWO places...

On the other hand, that's a sweet color you got!

yikes, these ARE old helmets. the rf700's were probably made in the early 90's. all helmets have the date they were manufactured somewhere inside the helmet. i'd check that out and if it is that old, i would be pretty concerned. not just the fact that it is old technology but i believe that the foam padding etc. starts to deteriorate over time and looses it's effectiveness.

elanieo - what size shoei do you wear? i have an rf-800 (dated 99) in an XS that i only used for 1 season that i will give you for free. it's in great condition and i think it will match your bike (red/black/silver)

So what are the current standards for a street legal helmet?

Should I be worried that I'm still riding with an RF700?

Snell 2000 I believe is the current standard. DOT to me, doesn't matter. They're pretty lax on realistic cranium safety studies...

I wouldn't necessarily be 'worried' about riding with a helmet that maybe dated back a COUPLA standards. But I try to replace 'em every few years unless the Snell standard hasn't been updated by then...

i don't know if you should be worried but you should probably start thinking about replacing it. the manufacturers recommend that you replace your helmet every 5 years. yeah, of course it is in their best interest to say that $$$$ but there is also some logic to it. i guess a lot depends on how much wear the helmet has seen and how it is stored and maintained over the years. i do replace my helmets about every 5 years - to me it's worth a few hundred dollars to protect my head.

If that helmet you bought is from the 80's, I sure as hell wouldn't trust my head in it.

That foam dries out over time and gets brittle. Soon you don't have much protection at all.

I don't really remember when I bought the helmet... I guess that alone should be a sign.

I think I bought it new around '96 give or take a year or two?

The helmet is still in great shape... because it's been put away in a box for the past 4 years. That's when I sold my last bike and moved up here.

Now that I'm back on a bike... the helmet does seem a little looser than I remember. Probably from the foam changing over time.

I guess it's time to look at new lids.

doubt it... i'd rather wear the helmet i wrecked in last month than one of those... at least it'll protect me from most of the other angles

i am not so sure about that one.

some one will have to verify this, but what i have been told is with the modern helmets, they are meant to be disposable. They use a fancy lattice or crystal structure for the material that makes the shell. It does a great job of dissapating impact. once.
then the structure is compromised and offers nearly no protection for a second assult on the noggin.

kinda like a crack in an eggshell.
