    Back/chest protectors?

Knowing many of you are track day goers I thought I would start here. I am going to attend my first track day this season and would like to know what back protectors you guys/gals have found comfortable and affordable that fits under your regular riding gear. I will be using my street leathers as my TD gear. I am looking at the back protector as a track day necessity but having friends and acquaintances wipe out and have major rib injuries, I am in the market for a chest protector (for street use). Will be wearing it under my regular ride leathers so the jacket will be snug. Not looking for cheap shit. Want honest 1st hand opinions please.

    Re: Back/chest protectors?

Im using the bohn carbon pro racer back protector. I like it a lot. Its flexible and I have crash tested it which it did great in.

Ive also used one from velocity gear but I didnt like it at all. It was hard and stiff which wasnt a big deal in riding form but it hurt like hell walking around. The other thing I didnt like was it wasnt long enough. I never felt very safe in it as it didnt come down to my tailbone like the bohn one does.

    Re: Back/chest protectors?

My only experience with back and chest protectors is the 3 back protectors and 1 chest protector that I own. They are all Alpinestars. The current ones that I am using are the Bionic back protector which is CE level 2 certified and there chest pad thing that you slip between you and your suit. I wear a tight suit (because I like beer too much), yet these feel quite comfortible while in a riding position. I haven't crashed in these yet, but I crashed in my old back protector (didn't land on my back or hit it, so I can't comment on it's performance). All in all, I am satisfied.

    Re: Back/chest protectors?

I LOVE my custom fit chest/back protector combo from www.impactarmor.com
Used by Troy Corser, Coin Edwards, the Haydens, etc etc. Shitty website, but amazing product... I've crash tested it a few times & so far I've never sustained a rib or back injury.

Mention Tony's Track Days & I believe you may still get a discount.

I use the Bohn ProRacer Cool-Air back protector and have been very happy with it. I haven't hit really hard on my back with it, but haven't had any back pain or bruising from any get-off. Looks like they make chest protectors as well now.

    Re: Back/chest protectors?

Can't comment on how it works on the track/crashing cuz I just got it but I got a sixsixone back protector and it fits nice just trying it on, just another option that shouldn't be crazy expensive (they have a few models).

    Re: Back/chest protectors?

Thanks for the input! May it be tried and true or just for fit. I am at least pointed in a direction during the off season. It seems the tailbone length of a back protector is an issue with some makers. Looking to keep using my existing gear without having to change sizes using extra gear. Riding while feeling like an ump lumpa doesn't seem, well, fun!

I'm not that far from you. If you want to swing by with your gear you're welcome to try the sixsixone protector to see if it fits. I'll be around most of the week.

My NEW Colin E is on it's way. The templet fit perfect! Great stuff, the chest protector worked wonderful last season, so the back protector will complete the full deal.

    Re: Back/chest protectors?

Right now I have an Icon Field Armor Vest, which has a sort of chest 'pad' plus a partial back protector. The back protector doesn't go down very far, maybe to your belt line? It works well, I've been nailed by oncoming bikes in the back and didn't have any issues, but I'd like to see the protection extend a touch further. The shoulder straps have metal loops on the very tops of the shoulders that dig in over time when worn under leathers. Overall, it's a cute looking piece of gear, I'll continue to use it on the outside of my old suit to protect my leathers in the event of a crash when racing minis, but I'll using something else with my new suit.

Anyone have any comments on the back protector Vanson includes with their suits?

cheap, not much coverage and a pain in the ass to get positioned in your leathers correctly...that being said i've crashed in mine 3 times and no back injurys.

i have also have an A* bionc back/chest protector combo for the track this year. retardedly bulky but feels pretty sturdy. i haven't crash tested that one yet though.

Damn this Forcefield Armour is awesome. I've been wanting it for a few years and -jro- just picked me up the fullset (front/back) for my birthday. It's very very well made, fit & finish is impeccable, and I'm really digging the feel of the armour. Super pumped on it and def worth the wait!

It's imported into the US by Johnson Leather out of San Francisco. Talked to the owner at the NYC IMS show and tried it on, got fitted, etc. http://johnsonleather.com/

Highly recommended. This stuff has won all the European armour comparisons. Highest rated crash protection etc.

Bump, looking to replace my back protector this year with a chest/back combo. I've seen the impact armor and wondering how this forcefield stuff might compare in terms of price, protection, and comfort...a13x, any idea?

Recently saw a picture of the Impact Armor on RRX.com (http://www.roadracerx.com/article.php?article_id=1202) . Roger Hayden uses it. HOWEVER, one thing I've noticed with Impact Armour is the chest protector is way smaller than the Forcefield. The Forcefield covers more vertical area in the front and extends all the way around the ribcage/kidneys on both sides. I like that.

I tried on my Forcefield stuff under my snug leathers the other night and everything fit up just find. Movement, comfort, etc was all great.

Also the Forcefield has the highest rated armour rating and it's build quality is excellent.
