Talking Possible next bike, Sprint ST

Well I just sold my bike. I am buying a house and a second car in the mean time. But this winter its left over bike shopping.

All the reviews have been positive. The only prob reported from owners are overheating issues in traffic (of the rider) and crummy factory hard bags. It weighs 100lbs more than my 600, do you guys think I'll notice/mind? The new 1050cc is supposed to have a very wide torque spread.

I have an 01 ST and love it, however, the suspension is kinda soft when things get really lively--but that may be due to the set up is with the hardbags and when I take them off I am dropping some significant weight. My local shop sales guy had an 05 out for a couple of days and observed that the power band was impressive and pulls continuously right through the red line. He came off of a Daytona and a Speed Triple and noted that the suspension was slightly softer. The exhaust note was very impressive for a stock bike; very similar to mine with a 2 Bros can. The bags appear to be a bummer; I would think Triumph will be re-designing them with better seals.

The bike looks, sounds and feels great (sitting on it) and although I haven't actually ridden it Ive heard great things from all over the place (check out T595.net). Who cares about the factory bags, you can get a factory mount and put on any bags you want.
I ride a Daytona and the power band is great for street riding, and Ive heard the 1050 is even better. In terms of comparison with the 600 (in weight etc) its a totally different animal.

For better or worse? I think my old bike at 375 dry was about right. Problem is all the new SS bikes are micro machines. I suppose I could always get the ZZR600.

IMHO I'd have to say that the 1050 will feel slower. It has a longer trail, and wider rake than the 600 you were on, it is more upright seating, and you will feel the weight. The softer suspension will make you rethink how you enter and exit turns, not to say you can't hammer it through it still. But you will be able to ride 300 mi to the best roads you can find AND ride back home and not feel completely beat. Oh yeah, and the sound and grunt of the triple is fantastic.

You could always get a Hawk GT to supplement the stable...

Love the looks, and would love the litre power
    and
I Love the "Not a Jap Bike" Triumph Stigma
Great Following and not a Cookie Cutter bike.

I would love to trade the VFR for a new Sprint, but.......

I love the VFR, and it's cheaper on Insurance
    And
I don't care for the Plastic Tank on the Sprint
    And
The tail light /fender set up is horrible
    and
The closest shop is about 70 miles away

I keep talking myself out of loving the Sprint

I thinkk for the better, but its a personal call. You have to realize its not a pure sportsbike. Its designed with touring and comfort in mind, and as a side you can rip the twisties as desired. With that in mind, I still think it will feel very very very fast, but just not as flickable as a 600. Like all bikes thopugh, its moslty rider dependant. You should try to test ride one, Triumph is one of the few bikes that you can SOMETIMES take a test ride on at certain dealerships.

Any tradeoff in performance will be 10x compensated by how much more liveable the bike is.

Longer fuel range, better fuel economy, FAR better bad weather comfort & protection, FAR better touring capability, etc..

If you are a good rider you will definitely not have any trouble keeping up with anyone on the street with this category of bike.

If you go for it the other bikes to look at are the VFR, Duc ST2/3/4, and there is probably some BMW equivalent but it will be more expensive, more touring focused, and less sport focused.

I will hopefully be getting an ST very soon! I will be looking into the financing options this week, as well as seing what dealerships have it in stock. I am leaning towards the Silver or the New burgandy Red with the ABS, but that blue is sharp!

I'll let you try it out when I get it if you like. Just leave me the key to your new cage first!

Does that mean if I dump the bike you drive my car into a telephone pole?

The 200 mile tank range is a big plus. Not so much for touring duty, but I can get 4 trips to work out of that instead of 2.75 now. Hopefully the performance wont be an issue. It may be slightly slower but I hardly ever ride all out. I think I would appreciate the gobs of torque much more.

I also would be very far from my closest triumph dealer. No biggie cause I do my own maintenance but a pain if there is warrenty work or recalls.

I am torn between getting a bike that does everything and getting 2 more focused bikes. I would love a K4 gsxr-750 and something more touring.

Yeah, I definately can keep up with most sport bikes and mine is the 955 and not the 1050. I don't think speed and responsiveness will be a concern, mostly I was referring to the bikes feel of flickability as compared to a 400lb bike. I do like the feel that this bike gives when you really ride it. it just begs to be pushed. Sometimes I think I am too reserved for it.

I can easily get 200 mi before the fuel light comes on, I think I may have managed about 225 before I saw it a few times.

Do check on the recalls, there have been some already on the new 1050s for the ST, Daytona and the S3.

Definately find the local shop since they encourage test rides. First time I was on one I was convinced.

I'm heading to my local dealer right after work! I heard they have a Blue one at Performance Cycles. If it's still there. I heard these puppies are like hot cakes!

What recalls have you heard about on the ST? Hopefully by the time I get one it will be all worked out.....

There is some good info in the sprint forum over at triumphrat.net. I believe the recall was a coolant hose.

    Fair nuff!

There have been a couple on the S3 I think, maybe one on the ST. Triumphrat.net is the best place to check, along with t595.net.

    Cheers.

    I thought of the ST

    Think it is really gorgeous...

But down on power not adjustable yada yada

so bought the Gixxer 1K5K Over the winter I
will human up the ergos which I believe is more
doable then adding the power etc.

Making a seat and think I am gonna figure out
how to get FZ1 bars on it..

On Sunday it got 45 mpg and just loafed around except for the cross up wheelie.

Congratulations Mike - that is great news. Lovely bike, I will be very envious!

There's a good article in the Triumph "Torque" magazine I have at home regarding how the ABS is implemented, if you like you can take it away.

    Cheers
