    I managed to tangle my ring finger up in the sprocket when the bike wasn't even running! It hurt like a bitch, poked a nasty hole in my finger (which healed completely woo!), and bled everywhere (stitches probably would have been a good idea, oh well). I can't imagine the damage that a running bike could do (yes I looked, no I don't care to remember what I actually saw, much less do I want to imagine what that felt like). Lesson learned: spin the tire such that the chain is moving AWAY from the sprocket on the side from which you are holding the chain. There were two of us and I was trying to help by cleaning both top and bottom at the same time...one of us was gambling and it turned out to be me. Whoops.

    Been cleaning and lubing my bike chains this way for some time now.
