Clutch cable?

Ok, i have 30,000 miles on my 04 YZF 600 and i noticed that my clutch lever got really slack so i tightened it up about a week ago. I have got roughly 1000 miles since tightening and it seems like it is starting to loosen up again. the adjusters are tight so i know those aren't moving, and on the handle side there is no fraying whatsoever.

Is it just normal stretching of the cable or is it time to replace the cable? I can't see the clutch end of the cable since it goes inside my sprocket cover so what are the chances that it is fraying down there?

Check the adjustment nuts where it connects to the motor or replace.

maybe your clutch needs adjustment

not familiar with the yzf, all my bike the clutch adjustment is a locknut on the clutch actuater rod (under sprocket cover) , cable adjusters only adjust length of cable that does not have anything to do with adjusting the clutch

clutch has to be adjusted first before you fiddle with the cable length

Replace it. Inspect the old one and keep it in your trunk space. That way, if the new one ever snaps, you have a spare to get you home.

Thats what i figured, if i am taking the fairings off and the front sprocket cover off to inspect the other end of the cable, I may just as well replace the damn thing. I don't think i need to adjust the clutch itself, it is not too grabby or slipping at all, it seems to be working fine, just keeps getting slack in the lever which to me says cable stretch.

cables don't stretch as much as everybody is leading you to believe,

more likely your excess cable length is worn clutch plates, replacing cable without adjusting the clutch actuater is assinine

this process happens alot faster than the wearing out of clutch plates.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was fraying somewhere inside.

even if it's not, a new clutch cable is the cheap fix... try that first.

Yep, Cables turn to taffy, then snap... Have had it happen a few times...

no, that happens when a clutch cable begins to chafe on something or inside the housing and begins to break

Clutch plates don't all of a sudden start wearing out really fast... and if they did, the cable would get MORE taut as it needs to go further to make full contact. His is going slack.

cable begins to chaffe when you ingore your clutch adjustment and fiddle with your cable instead

no reason a clutch cable shouldn't last 100,000 miles
