    Re: Commuter bike advice

If you want a mile eater, you want a Goldwing.
You can buy one in any price range you'd like.
    The new ones are $30k.
1 Gen old ones (pre 2018) can be had for $8kish.
2 Gen old ones (the 1500) can be had for $2kish.

You're going to say no. That's cool.
Keep in mind that I've done tens of thousands of mile commuting on a GL1800.

I feel like there are some BMWs (like 'bubs mentioned) that would fit the bill as well. I don't know enough about them to help.

What about a 2014/15 DL1000? They are a little more exciting than the 650's

If i was gonna get something goldwing-esque id get a road glide. Its not that i dont like them. Its just a lot of bike. I did start browsing some bmw GSs and i found some well equipped in my price range. Even some without 50-75k on them. Lol

While the 2nd gen DL1k is a little more visually appealing and it checks the power to weight ratio boxes, im still not convinced its the bike for me.

you can do all of those bikes...but honestly any of the newest bikes are just easier to ride. sure they don't have 170hp, but the mapping, suspension, brakes, and clutch are just so damned smooth and simple feeling the way a camry runs. I'd say get the newest 700-900cc twin standard you can afford.

Ive been poking around and looking at adventure bikes and have kind of homed in on the KTM 950/990 adventure. I can find some pretty well set up in the 6-8k range. I realize they are more offroad biased so im curious how they do slabbing. I know Chip had one, and maybe he will have some input, but has anyone else? Or maybe some other suggestions i havent thought of.
If you are looking for a multistrada I have a 2015 s that I am about to trade in. Fully loaded. I’ll give it to you for the trade in price

Thats a nice offer but the lack of close proximity service centers, and cost of said services is quickly turning me off to them.

    Re: Commuter bike advice

Personally, I've been looking for a Suzuki Boulevard M50. 800cc, shaft drive and FI since 2005. Doesn't really get any lower maintenance than that. No, it probably doesn't have any real get up and go, but I spend half my commute sitting still and the rest at normal car speeds. Maybe one of the other larger displacement shaft drive Japanese cruisers like a Shadow or something would fit the bill a little better?

I think any bike that is especially optimized for dirt isn't going to be ideal for commuting/slabbing and vice versa.

    How about a Ural?!

I dunno, man. I'm sure you don't intend it, but you're kind of all over the place. You want power but you don't want a fast bike. You want to do highway but you also want to do dirt. You want a super ADV but think they're ugly or too much money. I don't know what's left.

    Not really. I dont want a 70hp 500# bike. A 100hp 500# bike is more acceptable.
I dont want some super tourer or sport tourer that will easily cruise at 140 all day without even realizing it.
I only think the DLs are ugly
I cant afford a brand new $13-25k bike. Im probably pushing it at $8k tbh.
At this point im still in the blueprint stage. Ive just begun looking for employment out of my locality.

Gearhd6- thats a nice set up. Price too. Tigers are on my radar too.

You asked for advice and yet every time someone gives you advice you brush it off with some excuse or another. You apparently know what you want to get and should just go get it. Don't worry we will all get a good old NESR chuckle if you wind up selling it because it didn't really do what you wanted it to do even though everyone told you that in this thread.

This is how I wound up with a Hyperstrada 821 with a touring screen, and why I'm in no hurry to part with it.
Relatively light for a bike with luggage, plenty of power without being a cruise missile, just enough wind protection to bomb down to NYC.
Not really suspended or shod for the dirt, so maybe the Tiger is better.

    Re: Commuter bike advice

I guess you can say I was looking for something similar... a good commuter, dirt roader, and something I could tour on while still having fun. I bought a Gen1 Triumph Tiger Explorer (Tiger 1200). It's big, it's heavy, but I love the shaft drive, cruise control, heated grips/seats. I got like 40k on mine now and if for some reason I'd have to replace it, I'd just get the newer model. I turn the traction control off for some fun and hit the twisties and still pass about 90% of the sporty bike riders here in SoCal. I have 5 other motorcycles right now and yet I always seem to grab the Tiger. Just a thought.

The Tiger 800 posted above would be sweet too.

yes i did. Ducati wasnt part of the curriculum. Not to say i couldnt do it. Time is usually my issue. I asked for advice regarding adv bikes not goldwings or shadows. Ive never bought a bike that didnt do what i wanted/expected it to do.

I didn't take that as constraining the problem to ADV bikes, just what you had explored.
I mistakenly thought you were looking for a great commuter, not a great commuter that is an ADV bike.
I misunderstood. Apologies. I'll go away.

Its fine. It may have been my fault. Since i cant afford to buy a touring bike and a hardcore adv bike, id rather have the adv bike as i think ill get more use out of it. My original question was aimed at the 9x0s just because they are so dirt oriented that i wasnt sure how they faired as a highway hauler. I know the multi, gs and tigers are great at both, i just have always really liked the 9x0s but im starting to think it may be a bit too dirt specific for my needs. Just like i think the multi is at the opposite end of the spectrum by being a bit to pavement specific.
I think i need some seat time on the tiger and GS.
