Are You Still Commuting on Your Bike?

Just want to know who's still commuting in the morning when temps are below 60 F. I have switched to riding my moped and I'm going to try to break my coldest morning record of 37 F

When I lived in Warwick RI, I was commuting an hour to Pomfret CT on a DRZ400 on roads averaging 50mph. That was cold at 37 degrees. Won't do it again.

Now I ride 20 minutes on back roads averaging 30mph on a Tomos Streetmate with a windshield. Also wearing a michelin-man jacket and leather coat over it with winter gloves and snowsuit-type pants over my jeans and work boots. Helmet too. So far, so good at 40 F.

    What is your setup?

Heated grips and jacket liner. Pretty short commute so I'll stay on the bike until the snow flies and they sand the roads.

Re: Are You Still Commuting on Your Bike?

Today marks the 6th day since March that I drove, rather than rode to work. I was just a weenie today (it was actively raining when I left the house).

Coldest it's been when I left the house was 23F. I have gotta get some heated glove liners. Depending on which office I'm going to my commute varies between 40 minutes and 90 minutes.

I will ride until the trucks start putting sand down, about Dec 1 normally. 25 miles each way. My coldest ride to work; the sign in front of the bank said +4 F.

Re: Are You Still Commuting on Your Bike?

yes, not everyday, but quite a bit
    43 miles each way

I should add that I do have heated grips and wind deflectors on the grips as well. Everything else stays quite warm. In the winter, the FJR foot heat problem is quite nice.

I'm still riding... As long as it's not raining when I wake up.

Re: Are You Still Commuting on Your Bike?

Rode in today. I ride unless it's wet, cold, or I don't want to. Mid-30's in the morning is my "not worth it" limit.

    18 miles each way.

I no longer have the "ride at all cost" mentality. I do it for the enjoyment. If it's too cold to enjoy it, I don't ride.

That being said, in the summer, I ride most every day, including rain days. Wet isn't too big of a deal if it's warm out.

Dress pants, button up, dress shoes every day. I just leave the shoes at work.

I'm still riding as well. 30miles one way. It will be my first winter here so at this point I'm hoping to make it into November

Yep, and once I have the controller for the heated liner, will continue through December. Heated grips help a lot, looking to get some hand guards to deflect some of the wind.

20 degrees is my cutoff with no heated gear or grips. Usually mid to late December.

Just need to block the wind at current temps (hand guards, good jacket, neck warmer).

The insulated gloves and thermal liners get used once it drops in the 40s.

90+ = dirtbike gloves, mesh jacket
60-90 = (most of riding season) short cuff gloves, vented textile jacket
40-60 = gauntlet gloves, nonperf leather jacket
20-40 = gauntlet gloves + heated liners, nonperf leather jacket, thermal underwear
    <20 = cage

Re: Are You Still Commuting on Your Bike?

I don't commute but in winter my deciding factor for taking bike vs cage is how long does it take to gear up with the extra layers required for the temp vs how long is the ride to my destination

I won't spend 20 minutes to get dressed just to ride to the post office and bank to do errands but I will take 20 minutes to get dressed to ride 90 miles, even if its -25° or snowing at a rate of 6"/hour

I will probably ride tomorrow. Today I have to pick up the dogs on the way home.. haven't figured out how to do that on the bike.

I want me a heated liner though. Considering a DIY project.

Still riding, although a short commute but the highway speeds and sport windshield make for an interesting substitute for coffee

Re: Are You Still Commuting on Your Bike?

I've been spoiled with a 4 mile commute for the past 3 years, so I was able to ride pretty deep into fall without much discomfort. Unfortunately that came to an end on Friday, but I have good pants and a heated vest so I fully expect to continue riding into late November even with a longer commute (assuming I have a commute...). Simply adding pants does wonders at preventing heat loss (I don't even have the liners in most of the time).

I still haven't put the liner in my jacket yet, or switched to the Thinsulate gloves. I ride almost every day, if I can get to work and be dry I ride.
I wont ride on slushy days, YET.

Nice! This gives me more motivation to ride as long as I can through the winter. I agree withTheIglu; It has to remain fun to ride.

My boots seemed to be the only thing noticeably cold. Should I be looking at better boots or electric liners?
