    Commuting to Downtown Boston

Anyone else commute to work to downtown Boston (financial district) on their bike? The weather's turned the corner and they're coming out of the woodwork. Definitely some nice bikes around- Ducs, Triumphs, BMW's... just wondering if it's anybody on the forums here?

I usually work in the financial district, but have been in the back bay for the past two weeks. I think I've ridden in almost everyday this week.

Still gotta deal with traffic, unless you split lanes (I don't so I never drove my bike in before I moved to the city)

Look where other bikes park, park with them. I worked at 100 federal, and found a few good spots.

My favorite was on the sidewalk of the back entrance to 75 federal street, right next to the garage. Always a bike or 2 there, so I just kinda mingled my way in the few times I rode downtown.

Another good spot is on Pearl Street, across from Viga and Scali. Always a lot of bikes there.

Yup, I work on High St right there so that's my go-to spot (across from Viga). Have to get there kind of early though b/c it fills up and that meter maid will nail you if you are 4" into the loading zone that's marked by that black lampost... no mercy! Personally I love riding to work. I lane split occasionally if I'm running late, but try not to. My commute is way better as I just shoot down Soldier's Field road and Storrow right to the office. If it's not the bike it's the freaking express bus (barf). Door-to-door fun transportation, can't beat it.

I park at the State Street Financial Center. I usually drive the cage, but I'll occationally take the bike. They allow bikes in, so long as you have a monthly transponder.

I'd take the bike in more often, but my commute consists of 29 miles of virtually ALL HIGHWAY and that sucks. I'd rather sit in my climate controlled suv, sip my coffee and listen to 98.5 or whatever.

Ahh, yeah, I was coming from the North Shore, so it was all 93, which is terrible and not worth it to do on a bike. Since being in Brookline, riding downtown is much more fun and manageable.

Theres also a guy who parks a large scooter, that he keeps covered (so it looks the same as a motorcycle would covered), right on the bricks/park area splitting Atlantic and Purchase. I never had the balls to try parking there, but I've never seen a ticket on his bike either...

I swear there's something about meter maids not being able to ticket bikes that are covered; something along the lines of not being able to lift the cover b/c that would technically be a search and therefore cannot get the plate number. Just a guess, but I have never been ticketed when I park somewhere and cover the bike, and have been ticketed at the same spots without the cover. Could just be coincedence obviously, but I would be interested if anyone knew the answer.

Nice; I work out of the trade center for a bit when I'm at a client. Last year I'd park the lil' ninja 250 on the sidewalk next to the fence of the huge parking lot, across from Whiskey Priest. I'll be back at the WTC for 3 straight months or so come June.

I just started working at 28 State Street. Haven't decided about taking the bike to work yet as parking around there is kinda meh. Plus I a company paid T-pass too so its not costing me anything taking the T/

I think you're right about that. I haven't done the legal research but my general knowledge tells me that is the case. Also there is this:

    Re: Commuting to Downtown Boston

Eeesh.. well I may just have to start doing that, it's getting harder and harder to find a spot to put the bike downtown. I work in chinatown where I've run into KingCast, so you know what I mean about the spots. It's interesting to know about the bike cover idea because I see a few always parked outside the Mass Transportation building with a cover on.. and it's a dicey spot, but never have I seen a ticket.... I can certainly park out by legal seafoods where my regular spot is, but walking half a mile in boots and a jacket in the summer sucks!

I park between Channel 7 and the Post office on a street that I think is called Bowdoin Square. The're a big BSC there, too. Been riding on and off for a couple of weeks. The worst part by far is coming through Cambridge.

I think I've seen your bike there last year, I haven't been down much this year but that is a cool spot. Remember the Multistrada that sat down there all year? Poor bike.

Hey man is this what you're talking about.... during the day you can get away with the alley on the other side from where we met. You know there's a couple bars back there I forget the name of but it's out the back door of the Transpo building is where I shot this guy's ride I'm sure you'll recognize where I'm talking about, they don't want you there at night because of the clubs and stuff though:

It's ok to park bikes in that alley? What time to you have to get it out by?

Yep, that was my first year of bike commuting. That f'ing silver Multi ruined our covered parking... we used to be able to use the spaces between the posts near the door to Channel 7, under that overhang, until that dickwad left his unregistered/uninspected bike there all winter. Now our bikes sit out in the open and get sap on them a couple of times a year. Which is still better than taking the T but damn...

I wonder whatever happened to it? I was seriously thinking about trying to claim it as "abandoned property".

    Re: Commuting to Downtown Boston

Hey guys, I just joined here and saw this thread. I work and ride into PO square. I've had lots of success with the cover and I've been using it for two years now. I was tipped off to the cover when I left to go home and a couple people were out on a smoke break. I had a ticket and the bike next to me which was covered didn't. The smokers said the meter maid didn't even look at the covered bike so from then on I bring a cover. Sucks sometimes but its cheap insurance. Those meter maids can be tough to deal with.

I ride an 07 SV 650s blue with full fairings. Ride safe out there. Cages are getting dumber and dumber...

Sounds about right. I also had some meatstick put a cigarette out on the seat of my 250 last year when I left it in the North End over night at my buddy's apartment. Always use the cover now if I'm downtown overnight, no other incidents. Out of sight, out of mind works wonders.

Good to know! I got two tickets in about a 15 hour span this week (2 different locations) for not having an inspection sticker for this year. Was especially nice to see the asshat that parked in front of a hydrant for 2 straight days didn't get a ticket at all...
