I rode my bike in to work today, which represents the longest ride I've done on it to date. Overall, I absolutely *love* the bike - comfy and powerful, put together in a nifty package.
It has a rather frightening problem, which I need to figure out soon. When I roll on the throttle, it makes a horrible noise just as it is coming into the power band - it sounds like a steel pail full of bolts being rattled around. I cant find anything vibrating on the chassis, and I intend to disassemble the fairings tonight to look for a battery bolt that had vanished when I picked the bike up, but I just cant imagine where the noise is coming from. I checked the chain when I got to work, and the tension seems to be about perfect.
The noise is not present at less than half throttle, and is not present at all when revved standing still. The only thing that leaves (gulp) is a soon-to-fail-transmission.
Anyone have any encouraging words?
dude thats just the way those things sound! Get over it!

I once found a 10mm socket in my front sprocket cover. Made a god awful noise for sure.
Is this a used bike? Are you missing teeth on your sprocket?
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
Did it *always* make the sound, or did it come and go? Maybe that damn bolt is hiding in my front sprocket cover.....Originally posted by Honclfibr

Very used - 38k miles.Originally posted by hessogood

But the chain and sprockets are new.![]()
Timing chain rattle or valve clatter??? My CBR made a horrible noise at about 5000 rpm until I changed the timing chain tensioner. Good luck...

For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction - and sometimes a scar...
I remember that story some idiot left it in there when they were working on it. Whatever happened to THAT guy.Originally posted by Honclfibr

You suck at life. Why don't you quit?
My dad told me I could be anything I wanted when I grew up. So I became an Asshole.
Tlak to the PO and see what tune they are running. Also, very unlikely, but what are you using in it for fuel. Could be detonation.

I know i'm slow, you don't have to rub it in.
Why, Yes! I do think you're a Wanker!
Actually, that is what I was thinking. On Friday, it seemed to go away for a while, then return.Originally posted by lee955i

If that doesn't cure it, I'm thinking I will install a new cam chain tensioner when I do the valves.![]()
I would go with either the chain jumping because of worn or no teeth on the sprocket or the cam chain being loose and whacking the cases.
