    My cousin wants a bike

    But he's 17...
His parents are saying no of course..
I'm trying to talk him into a 300..
He won't have any of it. He is thinking 650R
Cuz he "knows" he can handle it...
    What am I up against?
Tried talking him into track 1st but he wants to ride with friends and of course 17 in school so he's not rolling in cash

KTM 390 is a great little bike that still rips - doesn't fit a 17 y/o budget though.

Re: My cousin wants a bike

My mom was very against me having a motorcycle before I moved out of the house. Looking back, I probably could have done it anyway, but I'm not too sad that I got some good driving experience before being on a motorcycle. It's not just the throttle judgement calls. It's reading traffic too. My favorite scenario is 2 lanes each way, waiting to turn left, and one person on the other side waves you on. It's so easy to forget about the other on-coming lane, and the 45mph oncoming car obscured from vision who doesn't realize you're gonna pull across their path.

That said, I was riding with my 16 year old cousin this summer and was really impressed at a few specific scenarios he made the right call on. Ones I might have done wrong at his age. The weird part is I'm the overthinker, and he's the cowboy. So it was a welcome surprise. He started in dirt, and has clearly picked up street skills in a hurry. Riding an older carb'ed 400. He's got his eye on bigger bikes, but he surely developed some good skills making a 400 keep up.

    YOLO.

Haha, but seriously...I could sit here and talk about how I was fine with a gsxr750 as my first street bike when I was 17...

But everyone is different. So my experience means jack.

    Give him the MV

    Load him up with gear

    Insure it for replacement value

Within 30 days, two problems solved

He's young and will heal quickly...

JK, I hope he finds a bike he loves and has a great experience, but I would advise USED.

How many times is an SV recommended as a first bike? A 650r is par for the course, no?

As Smutty said, it will be hard for any of us to make a recommendation without knowing your cousin personally. Everybody is different.

I'm not sure the 650 is that bad of a choice. May actually be more budget friendly than a 300.

Re: My cousin wants a bike

IMO for someone who already has motorcycling experience and is even the least bit competent, I think a Ninja 650 is the perfect starter. It's a much more wise choice than how I started (first ride ever on a GSXR 750), and I'm still alive.

Re: My cousin wants a bike

I'd say the 650 is the smartest choice especially considering a tighter budget. I say that because if he gets a 300, within 2 years he'll be looking to replace it with something bigger. I did a lot of dirt riding whether it be on 2, 3 or 4 wheels before I went to a street bike. My first real street bike was a VFR700 and I lived through it.

I know of a 650r getting ready to go for sale in MA. If you or your cousin is interested I can get more information.

Re: My cousin wants a bike

My first bike was a $1500 EX500, would definitely recommend it as a first bike, I had it for 4-5 years and probably 16k miles. My brother has it now as his first bike. Not the most stylish, but they're dirt cheap now, have enough power for highway speeds, and easy on the budget for gas/tires/insurance.

I agree on the 650 as a first bike. I started on a Hawk GT

SV650 naked? Less stuff to break in a low speed tip over, or putting the kickstand down in soft pavement in the morning on a hot day.

Re: My cousin wants a bike

I agree with the OP about starting on a 300 (or 250).
If he buys smart and used, he won't lose much if any money in selling it in a year or two.
It'll be cheaper to fix if any mistakes happen.
And *then* he can move to a 650 of some type.
