It's reading traffic too. My favorite scenario is 2 lanes each way, waiting to turn left, and one person on the other side waves you on.
My wife took the BRC to get her license. She handles the bike no problem, but as might be expected from the graduate of a two day, parking lot course, had not developed good visual habits. She was far too trusting of cars.

My vote is 650r, espcially having a bit of dirt experience.

What's he weight? For my size, any 300ish would be pretty slow, ie I'd get bored quick and sell it.

My mom had the same "no bikes while you're in my house". So I bought one, and put it in the garage, under sheet. Used to roll it down the driveway to go to work and school. Took her a month to see it.

Might as well walk over, knock on the door and bitch slap both parents. I get your point.

this cousin got 3 years older in 2 days of discussion on an internet forum, must be true, I just read it on the internet.

I totally understand the desire, I wanted a bike when I was 17, but my mom said no, I had an opportunity to buy a POS Honda S90 that every other kid in town had already owned for $50, finally my dad said, buy you own insurance and have at it, I owned it all of 2 months with it telling me feed me, feed me, more gazoline, somewhat like that plant in little shop of horrors before it decided it was hungry enuf to eat a valve, down a steep hill on a gravel road @ 80mph, tick tick tick, the only cool thing, living close to RT 17, I had the opportunity to ride App Gap with it, chug chug chug up the hill to the top, then turn around and zip downhill, never went all the way over to Waitsfield though

Re: My cousin wants a bike

With 5 or 6 bikes around here, I'm still getting revenge on my parents for not helping/allowing me to get a dirtbike when I was twelve. By 14 I was able to earn enough working tobacco to buy a beater. They wouldn't let me play hockey, either, so I'll be donning still-wet-from-Sunday's game gear at 10:10 tonight, too (LOL)

You know what? I've been hemming and hawing about getting rid of a bike or two and hanging up a type of riding or two, but after reading my opening sentence above, fuck that. I'm giving them all the franchise tag

Wet from the Sunday's game? Didn't your parents teach you to take that smelly shit from the bag and hang to dry?

The overall consensus appears to be 650 and after considering everyone's advise, I'd agree. He has since tried the same 300 to 650 tactics on the 650 to 600 argument.. I'm going to try to convince him to go 650r

He'll probably be fine on the 650R. It'll be enough to keep him entertained for at least 2 or 3 riding seasons.

Realistically, it's like 60-65whp on a 450lb bike. It's not a high-revving superbike by any means, but he should be able to "keep up" with his friends (something tells me they probably ride 600 supersports).

That's why it is named the Sportster, it's a sport bike.

plus, if he buys one he will get the extra BRC instruction in how to properly use only the rear brake and "lay her down" to avoid collisions.
