Crash report - no one hurt

I went for a ride with my friend who just got his license and this was his forth ride total and his first ride with me. I let him lead so he could set his own pace. We were riding on 118 from Warren ( I think) coming into North Woodstock (nh) and rounding a left hand curve at slow speed (approx 30 mph) and my friend looked to his right over the steep banking and that is where the bike went.

He low sided the bike and bailed just as it went off the embankment. Fortunately I was far enough back to get my bike stopped. He was up in a few seconds and I was very relieved. He was not hurt at all but the damage to his helmet and boot made for a good lesson as to why we wear them. He also had on a good jacket with padding. He mentioned how he felt his elbow hit hard but right on the padding and so his elbow was not hurt. So it was a good lesson and no one was hurt. The bike was still on the temporary plate and had less than 200 miles on it. The bike landed upside down and stayed there with both wheels straight up in the air.

Whew! ATGATT is right! This exact scenario is why I can't understand the anti-gear mentality. This thread would have been so much different without the gear

    All Praise the mighty ATGATT.

    How's the bike?

That's a cool road, but it does have some ill placed tar snakes, frost heaves and other crap in the pavement.

Careful out there, it has also claimed the life of a fellow rider.

Glad your friend is ok, hope the bike isn't too bad.

I have been riding pretty hard lately and it was a good reminder of how fast stuff can happen.

The bike is not too bad, I expect they will fix it. Bent handle bars, broken mirrors, dented and scratched tank and side cover. The pipes seem fine. I assume many scratches from being dragged back up the embankment.

No MSF course I take it? Glad to hear he's ok and you didn't follow him over. Silly target fixation will get ya in trouble.

From everything I've ever heard/read, it's best to let the new people be in front. Better them set the pace then try and keep up with someone who is much more experienced. I wouldn't want to look back and see a friend ride off the road. There is also a greater chance a noobie will follow too closely and rear end someone....

Just my two cents, I don't want to start a flame war.

If the leader is a responsible mentor and traveling at a reduced speed the new rider following will learn proper braking and corner lines. I'd guess both of these skills would have helped greatly in this situation.

Re: Crash report - no one hurt

He did take the msf course. That was about his only motorcycle experience though. I probably should have not let him pick the route. But it was a pretty normal curve. I doubt very much anyone leading would have been going as slow as he was going. I still can not believe he had that happen at that low of a speed. If anything he may have been going so slow he got bored and was looking around. I really think it was lost attention, then target fixation. Maybe I should have been laeding but I find it unlikely I would have been going any slower than that.
