    X-country trek

I have to get away for vaca and have thoughts of trailering the bikes across to Cali and ripin up the west coast twisties. Anyone have any Do's or Don'ts about traveling cross country.

I have driven to FLA and back @ break neck pace. Very uneventful except for the a/c unit the generator and the trans failing. This could be the worst case and it happened already

Don't bring any fruit or plants into California. I40 sucks, but you will get to see stuff like the meteor crater and you can stand on a corner in Winslow, AZ and wait for the flat-bed Ford to show up.

Make sure you ride the Mulholland Drive area in the Santa Monica mountains (carbon canyon, tuna canyon etc etc).

Also, North of LA you'll find the Santa Susanna mountains. Check out Upper Big Tuhunga Canyon road. No traffic at all. It's where they film lots of motorcycle commercials. Ride with a friend because if you crash out there alone, you won't be found and you'll be at the mercy of freezing nights and critters like mountain lions and rattlesnakes.

Also, you must ride Angeles Crest hwy. Go there on a Saturday or sunday morning and meet at the Shell station at the bottom of the hwy at about 7am. Ride the 50 or so miles up to newcombe's Ranch for breakfast.

I'm told there's actually a statue now at that very corner. Maybe Mr. Tomato will check for us...

    EAGLES LYRICS

    "Take It Easy"

Well, I'm running down the road
    tryin' to loosen my load
    I've got seven women on
    my mind,
    Four that wanna own me,
    Two that wanna stone me,
One says she's a friend of mine
Take It easy, take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels
    drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can
    don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand
    and take it easy
    Well, I'm a standing on a corner
    in Winslow, Arizona
and such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed
Ford slowin' down to take a look at me
Come on, baby, don't say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is
    gonna save me
We may lose and we may win though
we will never be here again
so open up, I'm climbin' in,
    so take it easy
Well I'm running down the road trying to loosen
my load, got a world of trouble on my mind
lookin' for a lover who won't blow my
cover, she's so hard to find
Take it easy, take it easy
don't let the sound of your own
    wheels make you crazy
come on baby, don't say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is
gonna save me, oh oh oh
    Oh we got it easy
    We oughta take it easy

I'd run Angeles Crest during the week. Fewer Chips and squids. Not sure when you're going but the road closes at times in the winter. Keep that in mind. I actually enjoyed the access roads to/from Big Bear. The PCH run is NOT all that great IMHO (aside from exceptional scenery in particular through Big Sur/Carmel/Monterey. The best riding starts after San Luis Obispo and runs up to Half Moon Bay. The riding picks up again after SF through Marin. For LA, The Mulholland stretch ( and the secret roads off of it is the closest fun to LA). Not sure how much time you've got but east county San Diego can be quite a bit of fun. Mt. Laguna , S1, S2 hwy to Ocotillo Wells, Palomar Mt. (front side seriously twisty/backside twisty and fast). Have fun!
