I've been using Waze for about 2 weeks now and it is awesome. I use it daily for driving to/from work and it has been spot on for cops and hazards.

And now it's owned by Google. Seems the developers made out OK.

Left the car at Oxx's house for a few days, then came back with another car and some jumper cables to limp it home one night. Halfway what should have been a 45 min trip (took about 3 hours, having to pull over every few mins to jump the car so I'd have headlights), a nice statie (NH, mind you) saw us and offered to give us an escort. No ticket, no harrassment, just genuine concern that we get there safely.

LEOs are all dicks, I tell ya.

I didn't see anything in there saying he deserved a medal, just that he wasn't an asshole. And I'm not sure it's in his job description to provide a sefety escort for a partially disabled vehicle. Had he been doing his job to the letter, he would have stopped her, informed her that her vehicle was not safe for travel, and called a wrecker which would have cost her some $$$.

Exactly. Instead, he used common sense, that we were traveling safely (at proper speed, too, until the headlights started dimming at which point we would flash, pull over, and recharge for a few minutes), with proper use of hazards on a no-traffic back road in the evening, and decided that helping us out was better in the long run than a ticket, tow and general asshattery. My main point is that I am respectful and get respect back. I also am not stupid and realize that being female may have something to do with my luck, but I certainly don't flaunt anything, just remain polite, respectful, and attempt a small amount of humor about the situation. My most recent run-in (if you will) was over a failed inspection sticker, which I was within my time frame to re-inspect, and on my way to the appointment. I could have been rude, but how would he know that I was within my time frame and on my way to the appointment? LEO asked if I had anything dangerous in the car. I responded with "only my daughter" at which point she waved with a huge smile and said "HI!!!" He cracked up and sent me on my way.

This thread reminds me of this last Sunday. Me and a couple coworkers were on a bike ride up in central VT, when we stopped at a small Deli in a small town. A local LEO was parked out front, couldn't have been more than 25 or so. He walked up to us and sparked up a conversation about riding, how he has a GSXR 600 that he rides around the area. He asked a bit about our bikes, asked where we had ridden so far, not because he wanted to make sure we weren't criminals, but because he wanted to recommend us some roads to ride that he loves.

On parting, he told us we wouldn't have to worry about him since he was headed back into town, and he told us to watch out for the some of the douchebags he works with. That came directly from his mouth.

All in all he was obviously one of the good guys, a real pleasure to talk to. He himself admitted that there are some dbags out there, but from my encounter there are also pretty cool ones too.

Obviously there's good and bad apples. My suspicion, and I have zero evidence to support this, is that the culture/atmosphere/leadership of the town,district,department,etc has a lot to do with the people hired and the general attitude. The small town I grew up in had a great group of guys, with a few exceptions. And those exceptions were dealt with. But I've also seen other towns near by (I have one in mind) be far less professional.

I know there's a couple LEO floating around here. Now that the head-hunting party has died down, it'd be nice if any could include insight from their shoes.

I can't even begin to count how many times I've been pulled over - and rightfully so, and NOT gotten tickets. My last ticket was over TEN years ago. Yes TEN. Each & every time I've been pulled over, I've fully deserved it and KNEW it could happen. I've probably gotten stopped (or caught up to while I was 'taking a break') at least twenty times in that ten year span, and yet have driven away empty handed...

The best was a coupla months ago when I declined to take a field sobriety test and instead volunteered to take a breathalizer. Two peeps in my truck had been drinking most of the afternoon, I had not on account of our kids being with us. My truck stunk like high hell of beer & stale smokes from them two, the LEO wanted to make sure it wasn't me. Rather than take the field sobriety, I asked that we '...cut straight to the chase...' and that I'd prefer to try the portable blood-alcomohol unit. Stopped that sumbitch right in his tracks!

One thing to be aware of in Waze. It keeps a database of all your travels - in my case going back to January. I don't know if it records your instantaneous speed (like Garmin tracks do) but it's likely.

There are other provacy considerations as well, so get acquainted with what it does if you have privacy concerns. Someone said "We have no privacy - get over it" but this choice is yours.

three years on the last infraction I received. It's a pia but it's worth the extra $ if you are planning on fighting it.

I believe it is 3 years without another infraction and it disappears. You can get charged with the surcharge for 6 years if you keep getting tickets.

Well that's the cost of living in a pure blue state, unfortunately. It's not right, but its better than the points, the penalty and the insurance rate increase.
