Curious, thoughts on earlier carb'd R1's....

So, I've never owned what I would call a "proper" liter bike. By that I mean, ~150 hp I4. I'll admit, I love my twins and my V4's, but the ZRX has a certain quality about it and I've always enjoyed the I4's I've ridden on track. Bear with me here, despite the rambling....

But a thought occurred to me, that the liter bikes I oogled over at the requisite age of 16-18 or so..... are now a dime a dozen at a few grand (or less!). So I figured perhaps one of those might be next on the list.... one thing comes to another and I had always thought the R1 was insane when it came out in '98. I prefer the earlier bikes ('98-01) aesthetically and always loved the R7.

Was interested to hear from those who have owned the earlier R1's about how they are to ride, particularly on the street and what years are preferred, etc. I'm a big believer in last of a breed and figured an '01 would be just about right..

    Yep, it's pretty much winter...

Loved my 1998 R1, had it for 4 years, put 35K on it, no mechanical issues and no issues riding 500 mile days on it. I had a chance to ride one for a short time mid summer of this year, it feels like a 15 year old bike, but still comfortable and smooth. The thing I liked about it most, was a street friendly gear box as far as ratios go. It was nice not to have to ride the clutch to take off, like most of todays liter bikes that do 100+ in 1st gear.
If I recall, the real numbers were 125-130hp at the wheel..and jet kit and exhaust system got you in the 140 area.
I was thinking of getting one again as a beater bike, just for kicking around. They were stupid cheap when I was looking, like nice clean bikes with 15k miles for $2,000-2,500. There was a nice red/white 98 for $2,200 about a month ago on craigslist

    What's a clean 01 worth with <15k miles?

Isn't that always the case! Yeah, one I saw he was asking $4k. Seemed all the money and then some for a 13 year old bike....

Will have to keep an eye out for something relatively clean in the $2500 range....

This one is a good deal IMHO, even the miles wouldn't scare me away at that price..plus one of the best color combinations ever made!

Also just for comaprsion, I owned 00' CBR-929rr after riding the 99' R1 and the 929rr did not feel nearly as dated as the R1.

Has anyone had experience with carbed bikes in the winter and/or colder weather?

The only F.I. bikes I have now are Ducatis. The ZRX in particular, does just fine in cold weather. Stabil is a must if it's going to sit for long.

Just make sure you leave race gas in the bowls and you should be good to go!

I had a 00' ZX-9r with a Ti-Force pipe and dyno jet kit and on a few occasions it would start sputtering/misfiring like it had water in the fuel. It eventually would be diagnosed with the carbs icing, not sure why it happened and it was never resolved. Just food for thought....

and if I recall correctly it won the magazine comparisons back then too. Scottie I could probably be persuaded to trade my 01 929 and cash for an RVF/VFR400 929 has an Ohlins shock, HRC linkage, GMD forks, Full Sato exhaust (a little beat up), PC3 with custom map, helibars. only issue is the headlight doesn't work. I think its a ground issue in the wiring somewhere.

and all that suspension would need twice the spring for my fat ass!

Interested in a parts bike VFR400 that's mostly there in trade?

I just checked and the front are .90. not sure on the rear since it was on the shock when I bought it used. I really wanna say it's a 1.0 but I'm not sure. it is the medium speed red/black one so it is faster than the yellow one but not quite as good as the Erion one.

Really needs a front end (or some love in one of the VFR or RVF front ends I have) and a better than stock shock along with some hardware, etc. Got the wiring, carbs, bodywork, tank, etc. The motor is the one in my race bike now which seems plenty strong for a stocker... just did a clutch and valve adjustment so it's good to go.

Re: Curious, thoughts on earlier carb'd R1's....

for full disclosure my 929 has been down a couple times. stock bodywork has only been dropped so has some minor scratches. other crashes were a highside (really a low side for the bike once I was in the air) in the rain that just bent the rearset a tiny bit. and a crash in the grass that tweaked the subframe a tiny bit. tail and passenger seat still lines up. those were with track bodywork that I no longer have.

so we really talking a trade here?
