    slipper clutch

i found out today, that even when equipped with a slipper clutch i need to be careful with the downshifts on these big twins. I dropped form 3rd to 2nd gear from 6k rpms, and that rear end came right loose and scared the hell outta me as i was scrubbing speed to enter a turn.

chalk one up for getting lucky.

That is why riding a twin teaches you to learn some new things...

Maybe next time just try rolling off the throttle... you'll scrub speed fast without needing to downshift.

yep... its not a 4, thats for sure.

With the barnett clutch in the RF, i could even get the rear end loose when upshifting before the tires got warmed enuff.
    hehehe.
But downshifting, the RF engine would happily rev up on its own and then bring the speed down for me, this thing just needs a little more coaxing.

I have just been playing around so far to learn about how she operates and getting more comfy with it.

Seeing you progression and wanting to help:

your next mistake will probably be cold tires. Cold rubber on a 600, no big deal; a person weighs enough in relation to the power to "save it".
Cold rubber on a 1000; could be trouble.

Be careful. You have a lot of good resources here, use them.

    slipper clutch

I can't for the life of me get my slipper clutch to make a rear wheel skid, it just free wheels when i let off the gas no matter what the RPM is? Should it make that much of a differance from a inline-4 to a v-twin as far as the function of the slipper clutch? Just curious

I've had the rear come loose a couple of times while down shifting on my SV650. Loads of engine breaking on the V-Twins. Even on my little 650 it's trickey let alone on a 1000. Plus the SV doesn't have a slipper clutch. When down shifting now if I'm even slightly in doubt I let the clutch out really slowly. It may not be good for my clutch but it's better then locking it up.

Randy O can back me up here: Let off the gas on an SV650 and you slow down like crazy!!! Let off on a inline 4 and you glide. There's a big difference between the two.

Mark, Maybe the slipper clutch on the R7 is working properly which would make sence why you cant break the rear loose :o

    Brent,
Just work on "Matching the RPM's to gearbox speed.
Just blip the throttle, when downshifting, you'll get it.
As for slipper clutch....Mark must be talking about his "Slipper clutch" on his Mini Haga? LOL!

I'm not sure what the Falco has, but the mille "R" has a vacuum diaphram that will engage the clutch to let the rear wheel slip.
The TLR has a mechanical ramp device that does the same thing.
When that thing engages, you know it! The damn scared the crap outta me when I deliberately D-shifted hard, just to see what it would do.
Made a clunk noise, then a whirrrrrr, then a Vroooom! When it let the clutch go....

You can feel the clutch lever pressure change, when you rev. the engine on a Mille.

Nope, not talking about the mini
The real R7 has a slipper clutch from the factory. You could drop 3 gears, dump the clutch (no throttle) and watch as the rpm's slowly go up as the slipper clutch does it's job. No clunks, bams or booms, just smooth, perfected action of the slipper clutch:o

well the falco has a Pneumatic something blah blah clutch. i am 98% sure its the same thing as on the mille, but not 100%.

I did drop it today hard, just testing a little. i am usually a lot more easy going with it. so now i know i cant plan on dropping more than 3 or 4k on a downshift without feathering it. no biggie.
