Some one chime in here. I heard that the premium gas at the pump is not as good as it was before the summer. something about it being a shittier quality because of the oil situation.
Does anyone know if there is any truth to this??

Only thing I can think of is because its used less often and sits in the tank longer then the cheap stuff.

They are all not as good as before. Ethanal reduces the energy in gas by 6%, so you're getting 6% less economy and 6% less power

+1 on R7's comment, as well as summer formulation is less volitile than winter formulation regardless of the ethanol considerations

Look at the pump when you fill up.

You should have seen the Ethanol stickers placed on the pumps in the last few months.

It's marked on every pump... probably by law.

I'm not sure 6% is accurate. 6% is accurate for Ethanol vs. Gasoline but the Ethanol replaced MTBE and the concentrations of gas vs. MTBE and gas vs. Ethanol are not the same, so it may not be 6%.

I haven't seen any loss in fuel economy personally. I usually calculate at every fillup. If Ethanol causes any lose in power or economy it is dwarfed by the effects of air temperature, my gas mileage is affected a lot more then 6% by cold air vs. warm air.

If it has MTBE that should be marked too.

It's a waste of your time to drive around looking for MTBE probably.. and you shouldn't find any anyway, MTBE is in the process of being banned due to causing bad shit to happen to people.. it's poisonous, carcinogenic, etc...

The pump I was at yesterday said "contains no more than 10% ethanol"

first time I have ever seen anything about ethanol on a pump.

    Ethanol = grain alcohol.

So yah we already know it is bad for you but people drink it constantly anyway. The stuff you put in your tank has been treated to keep drunks from sucking on the pump. (And probably why we'd never see a 100% Ethanol blend)

The problem with MTBE is it's water soluble, it is getting into the water supply and making people sick and it's very hard to detect and very hard to remove.

It's lame to worry about your horsepower anyway, the street is not a racetrack. You are not losing enough power to make a difference, barely any of our bikes have sophisticated enough fueling systems to be able to adjust for the fuel blend anyway.

Sorry I'm wrong.. if MTBE gets in the water you can easily smell/taste it.

The problem is it's expensive to clean the water supply.

ben i am not so concerned about horsepower
2 reasons the bike is fast enough and who the fuck cares about how fast you can go
i read in my manual dont use ethanol
but i had to once and reread it and it said dont use more than 15%
but i would still rather use the toxic shit if i have a choice
and how cares about people getting sick off it
    if there changing it cool
but after 20-30 years of it getting into everything it will be awhile before it is all clean

Its not just the HP youir engine can put out with the ethanol blend, but it is HOW FAR you can go on a gallon of it.

So, we are paying more money, for LESS energy when we fill up at the pump. Oh... that means I gotta go buy more than I would have in the first place to go the same distance.

    Thank our tree huggers again

Oxygenated fuels are PRE BURNT fuel

The they charge more for the less energy

The loss in DOLLAR mileage over pure gas is about 15%

    miles/dollar is your real economy

    HI test less high testy...
probably I am sure that people who used to treat their cars with a better grade ahve given that up for the $3 price.

MTBE is an oxygenator too, so you anti-environment poison the children types should be hating on MTBE too.

The Ethanol is already in our gas, you have not been hit with a 15% mpg penalty so just shove it.

Pure Ethanol vs. Pure Petroleum there is a 15% difference... you were not runnig pure Petroelum and you will not be running pure Ethanol.

"Treating your car" is total BS too of course. If it doesn't require high octane it does nothing for the engine, we should all know that.

And if you are going to "treat" your car to high Octane gas now is the time to do it, the % extra cost is at an all time low. $1.00/gall for 87 and $1.20 for 93 was a lot worse then today, Gas is 3x more expensive but the difference between 87 and 93 has dropped to 1/3 what it used to be as no matter how expensive gas gets Premium always seems to stay about $0.20/gal higher then Regular.

I do find these oxygenated fuels kind of funny. Virtually all FI systems are set up to maintain an optimum mixture. Yeah I know you folks know that. So your system detects more oxygen in the system because of the fuel, and injects more to compensate to bring it back to that optimum? You would think you might want some kind of fuel with the most energy per unit,,, so you wouldn't have to burn as much per mile.
Well, I'm not a chemist. I'll just have to rejet {carbs, remember them?} and bear it.

I heard putting a dash of acetone in your gas tank helps the gas to burn more completely thus providing better fuel economy. Sounds like any of those things that don't work if you ask me. Anyone tried this?

    and I said

I forgot what show it was on but I clearly remember them saying and proving there was 6% less energy in a gallon of gas with 10% ethanol vs a gallon of gas with MTBE.
You'd probably notice the 6% loss if you were getting 50-100 miles a gallon but in the average SUV/truck/minivan most of us drive, that 6% will be less than .5mpg

I have noticed a slight decrease in milage, I am a pretty consistent pace rider on my SV, my milage per tank has gone from 134-137 down to 127-132, that's about a 3% drop, 42.5mpg to 41.3mpg

but , I notice at the pumps, they say may contain "up to 10%" so it could be less, could be 8% or 7% or 5% or 10% who knows

This may help, I sell both conventional and E-10 gas where I work, Its higher Octane nad quite a powerful solvent, pre 1980 bikes should be careful, most after that should be fine.http://www.e10unleaded.com/index2.htm
