That's what I thought too when I first heard of them, but when I was competetively shooting I had a custom set molded and it is well worth the investment if you're going to be using them often. I've had my set for 10 years now and still wear them.

    awesome!

These are the non electronic ones only? or could you in theory get 2 sets and 'diy' some electronic ones?

curious because I see the chick in the picture has some kind of headphone there it looks like?

That white string coming out of her ear is a small cotton ball that they insert into your ear in order to pull the plug out once it has been injected and semi-hardened. I am not sure about what they are doing at this event, but the company that molded mine will make custom wired sets with headphone jacks.

Since the link at their page mentions non electronic, I'm guessing these might not be like that. I dunno, I'll bring some earphones just in case maybe...

    Thanks for the feedback Johnny.

Re: Custom earplug night at MotoMarket

I have never been able to pull the trigger on these due to the combination of the high price and the low noise reduction rating. NRR 29 is nothing special in such an expensive plug.

The disposable ones come in up to NRR 33 when tested the same way. That's a large difference.

That's a lot of hearing protection to give up for comfort. It's a lot easier to just try a bunch of disposables with better hearing protection till you find some that are comfy.

Here is a comparison with two of the better disposable foam plugs, which are really cheap. You can buy 600 of the Moldex Pura-Fits for the price of one set of custom plugs. Mean is the average listed in the data, low is one standard deviation low, high is one standard deviation high. Pretty interesting, in some ranges the custom plugs have a lower standard deviation which might indicate they work more consistently then off the shelf stuff, but those are also the same frequency ranges where the custom plugs appear to have the worst performance. Also consider 1dB extra attenuation means that frequency is 1/2 as loud. Highway wind noise peaks at 250hz and then trails off drastically as frequency increases, again showing the custom plugs as pretty weak. Wind noise supposedly is 100dB @ 50mph though, so theoretically all of these should put you in the "safe" range? edit: More data - 65mph is 103dB, 100mph is 110dB.

Just bought some DIY molded plugs. They work great at reducing wind noise and somebike noise. Only cost $15. Just an FYI

Re: Custom earplug night at MotoMarket

I had these made for my wife and I well over 10 years ago and they are great. I had very poor luck getting any of the regular ones to stay in or be consistent and these have been. I've used them for street and track on the bike, backpacking (shared areas in the Whites), and road racing cars and they have been great.

We don't have them wired for sound but I use bluetooth and helmet speakers as does my wife.

As tempting as this is, I've been reading a lot about ear plugs and I think I'll stick with my 32NRR disposables. They make riding REALLY quiet, and I don't think I'd want to lose any NRR rating.

the key to getting the full db rating is proper fit and putting them in. for some people who may have a tough time getting the disposable ones to fit these may be worth it if they actually plan to make an attempt to use em

Re: Custom earplug night at MotoMarket

I was there and got mine. They have to 'cure' for 24 hours so I haven't tested them on the bike. But, man, while I was sitting waiting for them to 'set up' in my ears, I can say for sure that they blocked the sound...it was almost like being deaf. OK...more deaf than I alread am!

...can't help myself. I'm a fool for a gadget/gimmick. (My best xmas present this year was Shamwow from my son!)
