    Cycle World on Adventure Bikes

    See http://www.cycleworld.com/2012/08/23...arison-review/

Reviews MTS 1200, Tiger, Tenere and a Guzzi.

Regarding the Tiger, this "Con" quote made me chuckle: "Total poser when the road ends and the trail begins". Of course I am biased.

Re: Cycle World on Adventure Bikes

Some days I think I might be the only 'adventure' bike buyer out there that just doesn't give a damn about off-road performance. Every one of these SUV comparisons is a turn-off.

All I wanted was an up-right sport-tourer under 1L that I could afford. The fact that she is naked below the waist and looks good carrying my bags doesn't hurt... actually come to think of it that rarely hurts!

So stop referring to it as an adventure bike and rest easy.

    Done: half-naked middle-weight sport-tourer

    That works.

If adventure bikes are the SUV's of the motorcycle world the Tiger 800 is the BMW X6M

Re: Cycle World on Adventure Bikes

Tough Bikes for Suburban Adventurers NYT

These bikes look ready to powerslide the Siberian Road of Bones, ford Chile’s Bio-Bio River or go mano-a-horn with an enraged Namibian rhino.

In reality, their riders are probably lawyers, creative directors and investment bankers, headed out for nothing more exotic than Sunday breakfast.

A life-threatening breakfast, to be sure, including eggs with actual yolks, caffeinated coffee and even pork-based cured meats. But any extraordinary riding skill or high-stakes route-finding will focus on getting back to the gated community in time for Briana Scurry’s 1:30 soccer kickoff.
    I especially like this quote:

As any real dirt-bike rider knows, the next-to-last thing you want while traversing real mud, sand, rocks or water is a sharp-edged, $20,000, 500-pound motorcycle. The last thing you want is to find yourself alone, trapped underneath one.

It means, "Fixed For You." Modifying a quoted post, in a way the second poster considers to be more correct or amusing. Putting after it is not generally considered necessary: the "FFY" is autotomatically considered to be a hack and not to be taken seriously.

    For example,

Another example would be replacing the picture of an X6M [a highly capable but controversial model, considered by some purists to be "the end of the M brand"] with a BMW 135, their entry level vehicle, and a pink tuner model, at that, straining the initial analogy even farther.

You should know I have great fun with the terms "Adventure Bikes" or "Adventure Tourers" and have suggested Advrider.com should more properly be called Commuterrider.com. Since I own two of them, I'm poking fun at myself as well: don't care, because they're good bikes, which is the point. Our buddy Beez, who asked us to take a picture of him with his own camera while trapped under his GS [unhurt] also enjoys tweaking purists, despite being a far better rider than me or most of those he rides with.

That guy in the pic is way skinnier than I remember beez, and if that were the actual beez he should've known to flip the bird for a shot like that. I'm calling: imposter!

Edit: I like to call advrider: those who have dirtbikes for weed and coffee runs.

So much tension among the Adventure rider community

For the record, if I were doing more true adventure riding, I would have another BMW in my stable...

Oh, I'm tense alright. I haven't smoked weed in 12+ years, and I'm on a diet so bacon is out. I drink shittons of coffee though.

Re: Cycle World on Adventure Bikes

I took my wee adventuring today. I explored some unimproved roads.

Found a new gravel dragon, that's or sure. I'm positive I cold not of made it up this hill with the bike. Going down was a bit unnerving. Nobody knew where I was, I was 8 hours from home, on a road I had never been on, with a 450 lb non armored Wee. Going down was lugging it in first while speeding up nearly uncontrollably from loose gravel on a long downhill section. It was a bit hairy. Missed the klr for that one I tell ya.
