Please read this if you work on vehicles!

I know it's unlikely to happen but everyone that ever uses a torch or welder should be aware of this. I was unaware of the Phosgene aspect but my Oncologist was 95% sure that tetrachloroethylene was the cause for me getting cancer. Just a friendly reminder to be careful when using chemicals and read the MSDS sheets when they are available(all are available on line). OK off my soap box.-Jake

It's basically mustard gas isn't it?

It's really nasty stuff, especially if you work on refrigeration systems. I've worked with my father a bit and when you un-sweat the piping you get a nice blast of it from the super heated / burnt freon left in the system, even after recovery.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting to read( I'm a refrigeration guy, can't count all the times I have burnt refrigerant with a torch while brazing). Very sorry to hear about your health. Tim

How were you exposed to it?

Solvent used in machine shops in the early '90's. I think it was used in dry cleaning as well.

I am pretty sure Brakleen is "Tri"clor not "Tetra"clor. They are two diferent chemicals. They are both horible for you but "Tri"clor is a lil more stable.

Chlorinated hydrocarbons were more closely linked to liver damage

In Remington I walked in a cloud of triclene that would condense on you and run into your shoes.

    Perchlorethylene is dry cleaning fluid

Freon is a fluoro chloro organic both fluorine and chlorine it will disassociate under heat into elemental gases.... acids in your system.

You will be happy to know that safety people and the government made industry use this because it was non flammable. The transformer fluid too.

    Great info and warning Jake

I was using a cutting torch just last night after applying some Advanced Auto MPL on a really nasty bolt without a second thought.
