    Dead Battery or ???

Bike started fine all day, seven sessions at the track. Drove home, tried to start it: starter motor turns over slowly (battery voltage 12.5V or so) and continues to turn over after releasing the starter button (it stops when the key is turned off).

Trickle charger now has the voltage at 13.1V. Starter motor turns quicker, but still keeps going after releasing starter button.

Ducati 749. Just starter looking over for loose connections. Lets hear your ideas.

I know nothing about a 749. I'd be looking into stater relays or solenoids.

Doesn't sound like a battery.. sounds like a bad starter and or solenoid

Sticky starter button... Possibly. Good call.

Starter... Maybe. Lower on my list of things to check, but possible.

Thanks guys. I was hoping battery (something simple). I'm leaving in the morning for another track, I'll use the street bike.

    The starter button isn't sticking.

Starter button could stick internally, without sticking externally. I had this happen with my fog lights on the GL.

    Just something to look for.

A way to check the starter button is to take it apart and jump it with a homemade pin connector and see if it keeps cranking after you pull the pin out.....To bench test the solenoid if it is internal in the starter would be to connect the starter to jumper cables and touch the solenoid connection via a wire to the positive side of the battery. After you pull the wire off it should stop spinning. If this bike only has one wire to the starter then it has a external relay/solenoid.

It is tough describing electrical things. Putting thoughts into words while keeping it simple is very hard. Too bad we can't draw pictures.

One thing to remember is with a sticky button after the engine starts the starter would still be spinning. Just like not letting go of the button. It would be making a awful noise.

    Re: Dead Battery or ???

Might be different but On my 2006 Monster when the start button is pushed and released, the starter will keep turning until the engine fires up. Maybe you've always held down the button until the engine fires up so you've never noticed this. If that's the case I'd check the fuel pump starting with the fuse and working your way up the electrical system.

Correct, the button just starts the starter, the ECU controls the cutoff.

Strange, the bike started fine this morning. Loaded on the trailer for an eight hour ride, starts up fine after the ride.

    Loose connection?

    Re: Dead Battery or ???

Slow cranking is a sign of resistance or weak battery... If the battery is ok then I would say a bad starter motor or relay.. a loose connection is possible but unlikely... Typically a loose connection would give you a no start condition intermittently
