    Arrow Think.

I'm not really into preaching to people but an experience today made me face a few things that I tend to avoid thinking about.

My dad and I went out for a ride today. The theme was "Holy shit it's cold" we started it was about 29 degrees and it dropped a bit on the way. Anyways on the way home there is a bar we stop at. We sat, thawed, and talked for a while (long enough for the tires to get cold again). When we were leaving, I was following the right turn out of the lot and BAM he went down in an instant, sparks flew and he slid into opposite lane. I gotta tell you this was one of the most terrifying moments of my life, to see a family member, a loved one fall like that. Luckily traffic stopped (and then people started driving around, assholes) I park my bike and run over to him. He is ok, thank goodness. I help him pick up his R1 and we sit on the side of the road for a few minutes, minimal damage to bike, the passenger peg was broken hence the sparks, but the frame slider saved the day again. The front upper fairing is cracked bad but he just so happens to have a spare lying around, lucky. I think maybe he gave too much gas on frozen tires, the back just came out from underneath. We rode home very slowly.

Moral of the story? In the past, What has kept me from speeding and acting like a dumbfuck (too much) on my motorcycle has been the possibility of destroying little Timmy and Suzy in some minivan along with the possibility of hurting myself and my bike. Today the anguish i would inflict on my family has taken the 2nd seat. Just make sure you consider the consequences of your actions.

Sorry to hear your pops went down... but glad to hear he's ok!

and I agree... great post... I know the first thing that comes to mind with me when I have the urge to do something stupid is my 2.5yo son... if I can't not be stupid for me... at least I can for him!! and that includes riding or anything else that could get me in trouble...

    Good post man, thanks.

A lot of the things that go through my head that keep me from doing something stupid I've read on here (believe it or not). Links to horrible bike wrecks, people's words of wisdom (like this post). And most important, like you said, the thought of my friends and family keeps me sane.

    Live to ride another day!

I can honestly say that since becoming a member of this forum I wear more gear at all times and ride on the road with a new level of respect for what I'm doing (and save any adrenaline seeking urge for the track).

Glad to hear your father is ok...

    Re: Think.

I can't imagine. I think of all the close calls I have had.
I don't have kids yet but that would add such a much more complex
dynamic to my decisions and thought processes.

    Great post

    Re: Think.

vry good post, glad that your dad is ok, i ride a lot with my wife and i am always frightened when i see anything out of the ordinary with her on her bike.

The most terrifying moment i had on my bike was during a group ride last year where i was near the front of the group and she was at the back. She got heat exhaustion and had to pull over to cool down and get a drink and since we were up front we did not notice until the next turn. When she didn't catch up for a couple mins my heart sank and i took off back to where we came from. Luckily nothing happened to her, she just pulled into a gas station and another group member pulled in with her and they were just waiting for us to come back. It scared me enough though to think twice about anything dumb for a while though.
