Dirt Bikes Seized by Boston Police

Re: Dirt Bikes Seized by Boston Police

Kurlon is right...all off road vehicles in MA technically need a registration in MA...this was a revision of ohv laws a few years ago...they just can't enforce it

In CA it's the same...revenue generation plus liability release

The duplication can serve several purposes:
    1. Can make the law stricter or more clearly defined.
    2. Can simply reinforce that something is illegal (to both aid in enforcement and so the politician can say to the complaining parties that they've done something about it).
    3. Can remain in effect if the state law is repealed.
    4. More paperwork = bureaucrat JOB SECURITY!

    ...to name a few...

Not sure I agree with that, but in spirit it sounds like the activities they are targeting need to stop, they just have a solution that seems unacceptably far from perfect.
I guess I see your first points about the city duplicating the statements, it just seems crazy to me when it's already a law that can already be enforced. I think there are larger fish to fry than reinventing the wheel and rewording existing legislature. But that leads directly into point 4 that you made.

Re: Dirt Bikes Seized by Boston Police

Color me crazy, but I still see nothing that covers vehicles stored in a fully enclosed building. Every source I've looked at covered "operating" a rec vehicle (state law) or unregistered vehicles stored in site of the public (city ordinances, usually limited to one). That FAQ you posted is vague, and says "in accordance with MA 90B" - which says "operated"

Not trying to split hairs, but that's a far cry from the "even register a bare frame" that Kurlon said, although he's usually pretty spot on with things.

The big thing I see is there's no "public land" vs. private land distinction. I suspect that is the change that was made years ago.

If I'm correct, it would also mean that my race bikes are legal, because I only ride them in NH (loudon) and NY (NYST)

Any of you that have been to Palmer, however, are criminals of the worst kind :

arghh...you're going to make me look it up??

when I get home I'll find it...I did re-read 90b and it didn't have what I'm looking for

IIRC this enclosed area thing is a different thing from the registration requirements that had been updated a few years back

Not only Boston. I was in Baltimore last week and saw a big group of ORV's flying down the street, at night, no lights.

I happen to love Charm City and spend a bit of time there. There's a few different dirt bike "gangs" going around, some of them are pretty crazy. The Illegal Dirt Bike Gangs of Baltimore | VICE | United States

Saw about 6 on Kneeland street last week, dirt bikes, no plates, maybe 3 helmets, the rest with heads wrapped in scarves to hide their faces.

It made me long for the good old days of the BPD TPF. These jackasses need a whoopin

They used all the power....down near the Fields Corner T station.

BPD Seize Several Illegal Dirt Bikes in Dorchester:

At about 10:20am, on Friday, October 23, 2015, officers from District C-11 (Dorchester) accompanied members of the Boston Fire Department to investigate a strong odor of gasoline emanating from a residential property located at 157 Adams Street in Dorchester. On arrival, officers were able to trace the smell of gasoline to the rear of the location. A search of the rear of the property enabled officers to locate six dirt bikes and one four wheel motor bike. Several of the bikes appeared to be in some state of disrepair. When officers attempted to locate the owners of the dirt bikes, no persons on the property claimed ownership of the bikes. In light of the aforementioned, the bikes were towed from the property and impounded. Officers have received numerous complaints from community members relative to bike thefts, as well as, the recklessly dangerous manner in which many of them are operated on our city streets.

Re: Dirt Bikes Seized by Boston Police

This just happened and has generated controversy because Maryland State Police decided to make no response.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...the-wrong-way/

large group of people on motorcycles and dirt bikes slowed traffic Sunday afternoon on the Capital Beltway, stopping to do wheelies in the middle of the lanes, and, in some instances, zooming in the wrong direction on the highway.

Video that appears to be recorded from a vehicle on the Beltway shows the motorcycles bringing southbound Beltway traffic in Prince George’s County to a near-standstill at about 2:15 p.m. Sunday.

    L. Young, a Maryland State Police dispatcher, said the department fielded “thousands” of calls from motorists about it, with some callers reporting about 200 motorcycles on the roadway.

Officials took no enforcement action, according to Maryland State Police.

People also witnessed motorcycles, dirt bikes and ATVs in D.C. and Virginia later in the afternoon.

    No state police response.

Kudos to the cops for doing the smart thing, and not the "might as well use all the swat gear, since we have it" thing.

    It is, after all, traffic...

So the only possible responses are nothing or SWAT?

How about simple arrest for driving to endanger along with an outstanding warrant check and confiscation of any illegal substances or property?

Have you seen other clips of what happens when they opt for the "simple arrest" strategy? Nothing. No way to stop them without hitting them.

At least they have this video, so they can make arrests based on the license plates of all these legally registered motorcycles.
