IIRC, the shrouds on the CRF80 and CRF100 are the same size sooo... decal swap?

Great stuff, We always have fun with those classes. I teach there. It is an intro to dirt riding. We also supply bikes and helmets/goggles.

Re: Dirt riding for little dudes in MA

So we took him to Wareham MX Friday. Everyone wa super friendly and Wayne helped him a lot. He was intimidated by the loose dirt on the track, so he spent two hours riding back and forthe down by some pylons, and developed a lot more confidence.

I'm confused by the ORV permit or pass system. The state parks say you have to get a day pass. But I understand there is a requirement to "register" the bike for use elsewhere - I just can't find how to do it!

You need to reg it the first time in person, renewals are on-line only. But at least they let you pay your taxes and print it out now.

find out what? how to register it? or the "requirement to register"?

back in the older days, you only really needed to register the bike if you were riding on state or federal OHV areas. "illegal but tolerated" areas, your own backyard, or MX tracks - don't bother. But within the last few years, the MA orv office found a new way to get revenue from anyone with an ORV vehicle: (I believe that...) As long as you own a dirtbike or ATV (even if it's a bike in a bunch of parts in your basement), and even if you ride it ONLY on your own property, you need to register it. It's retarded. But fortunately they don't have a way of enforcing it.

to read up on "how" to register the bike, just go here:

    http://www.mass.gov/eea/grants-and-t...s-generic.html

    here are the steps:

1.) bring your bill of sale
-OR if you never got one, have a friend make one. If the bike was never registered as an OHV in MA, and you don't have a title, then there's no way for MA to verify who the last registered owner was. So if they don't know, make up a bill of sale for whoever you want.
-back in my day, there was no formal bill of sale...nowadays they have one on their website: http://www.mass.gov/eea/grants-and-t...aleatvsnow.pdf

2.) pay the sales tax online: https://wfb.dor.state.ma.us/WebFile/...axDefault.aspx

3.) print out the proof that you paid the sales tax (ST-6) from the DOR website above

4.) bring the ST-6, cash, or check (no credit cards!!) to the OHV office, fill out a form, and you'll walk out with the ORV stickers to affix to the left fork
-back in my day, you filled out the application in the office. Nowadays you can download the pdf:
    http://www.mass.gov/eea/grants-and-t...itlingform.pdf

those stickers allow you to ride in any of the 6 state park trail riding areas:

    http://www.mass.gov/eea/state-parks-...ing-trail.html

    and the federal area:

    http://www.nae.usace.army.mil/Missio...illageDam.aspx

The state lands close in november and open in may. The federal area is open year round.

the only way that your registration is checked, is when the rangers do periodic and random inspections of bikes in the parking lots

I don't know if it's actually valid, but back in my day those stickers "technically" made it legal to ride on frozen ponds and lakes too...not sure if it's still true

and I believe the registration requirement technically applies to MX tracks too...but as I understand it, nobody actually does it if they just ride mx

other than that, you can ride at the dirt track in winchendon

It should be the same office you reg the boat at.
There is no day pass for anything east of Worcester, and afaik it's just oct mtn and bearwhatever that require them out west.

Look into mvtr, I believe they do a bunch of club only type rides, and they'll be sure to get jr pointed in the right direction.
There was an xr100 in the peewee class yesterday too.

BTW, this was spot on and made it easy.

To be able to pay the sales tax online, you have to have purchased the bike no earlier than 2011. You have to pay late fees, in my case, I think it was $12.

They check the Bill of Sale to see the VIN matches, didn't seem to get much scrutiny. But they now have a formatted BOS online, referenced above.

So your boat stickers are in the mail?

Use some acetone to clean wherever you decide to put them. Lowest bidder = the worst stickers ever. They're horrible. So, find some place permanent.

on the boat stickers, i laminated mine and use zip-ties to keep them on the upper end of the forks, between the clamps. single piece of thick packing tape over that to keep ties in place. been great for a few seasons.

when i need to take them off, peel up packing tape, cut ties... repeat.

I've seen guys stick them to PVC pipe cut to snap in place around fork tubes too. Anything to increase life expectancy/transportability between bikes.

Re: Dirt riding for little dudes in MA

I actually just got off the phone with the office, all this talk inspired me to do the right thing: $5 plus an affidavit for a replacement year sticker, $40 for replacement white stickers. Fuck that Massachusetts. I'll talk reason to any green police that have an issue with my ratty stickers, but I'll be sure to always have my green reg in my camelback.

Are yall saying the sticker that is supposed to go one the fork doesn't hold up? Maybe cover it with clear packing tape?

One thing I've done with a number of registrations. For example, guess how long those paper registration docs last on a boat on a mooring in the ocean? I take a picture of the doc (and my AMA card and AAA card) and keep them on my smart phone. It may not be the same as the real McCoy, but at least you have it. I also had some "All Weather" paper that felt like white Mylar. I used to copy stuff onto that as well - much more durable.

You mean the sticker for the forks? I picked it up in Boston. The boat stickers are two years, never had a problem. But on our inflatable I put it in the transom because they peel off when you roll them up.

Re: Dirt riding for little dudes in MA

Since everyone is talking about getting an off road registration in MA, does anyone have the details of getting one for an out of state bike where taxes are not collected (New Hampshire)? I would like to get an off road sticker so I can ride in a few state forrests when I go to visit my mother in the Berkshires but the information they give specifically ignores the case of a person from NH trying to get a sticker in MA. Needless to say I'm not going to pay sales tax on my KTM just so I can go off road in MA when I already have a valid street registration.
