Preston, Conn. — Witnesses to a fight Sunday at a Preston bar told police that members of the Legion of Doom motorcycle gang were relentless in their beating of a Norwich man.
The victim in the beating, Kevin Kennedy of Norwich, remained hospitalized Tuesday night at Yale New Haven Hospital, but his condition had been upgraded from serious to fair, a hospital spokesman said.
Police have charged six men in connection with the incident that involved thrown tables, broken bottles and at least one knife, according to witnesses.
While at the Brookside Cafe on Route 2A, Kennedy was stabbed in the leg, repeatedly kicked and punched in the head while he lay on the ground and was thrown through a car window, according to one witness.
State police were called to the scene at 1:38 a.m. and arrested six men.
Three bouncers at the bar told police things got out of control when a dozen members of the Legion of Doom, wearing matching vests, started taking turns beating Kennedy on the back deck of the bar. At one point, friends of the victim were able to get Kennedy outside to a parking lot across the street while the bouncers held back the bikers. The bikers followed, however, and continued the beating in the parking lot.
That’s when “all hell broke loose,” according to one bouncer’s statement to police. People yelled racial slurs, someone pulled a knife and one man was “randomly sucker punching people.”
Kennedy told police the brawl started when he bumped one member of the gang. A fight started and others jumped into the fray.
Carlos Aguinaga Jr., 26, of 23 Norman Drive, Gales Ferry, also was charged with second-degree assault in connection with the stabbing. He was released on $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear July 16 in Norwich Superior Court.
Aguinaga and five other men were charged with third-degree assault, conspiracy to commit assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree riot and breach of peace. They are: James C. Condict, 26, of 113 Georgia St., Groton; Steven A. Franchino, 26, of Middle Village, N.Y.; Ricky T. Gray, 43, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Michael C. Cavaluzzi, 23, of Peekskill, N.Y. ; and Justin Schwartz, 26, of Flushing, N.Y.
Some of the men have posted bail. At least three were presented Monday in Norwich Superior Court.
Gray, Franchino and Schwartz, who all appeared in court Monday, were additionally charged with first-degree intimidation due to bigotry or bias, which is a felony.
