Anyone ever use a disc lock by JP Cycles? I found THIS ONE on Ebay for a good price but the old 'you get what you pay for' comes to mind...

The disc lock is fine when you're just parked temporarily getting food or at a hotel or something.

If you're in that bad of an area you're just fooked anyway.

No way I'm carrying a 30lb "fuhgeddaboutit" chain & lock with me on a trip. (Only time I ever need a lock)

If you get kryptonite make sure you get one of the new ones that is not vulnerable to being picked by a bic pen. (Cylinder type key)

I have a 30+ Pound chain that I use here at UMass Lowell. Fortunetly everyone brought their bike back to school today and doesnt bother to lock or cover it so I'm much less worried now.

if your buying a lock a braided strand cable is alot tougher to cut with bolt cutters then a chain. I have a 12mm kryptonite braided cable and I tried to use the pen method to open it with no luck. the round part is bigger than an average pen.

    disc locks

here's the problem. I live on a college campus of which I am also working security - shitty deal....
I park my bike at the security office but would like something to put on it and when I am out downtown for lunch so a big lock isn't really something I want to lug around. I thought that the disc would be a good one to carry and just something as a quick deterant. My bike isn't too likely to be taken cause it's a nakked bike and most of the bikes taken round here are gixxers...

Nikon I'd buy the biggest nastiest lock & chain you can get and just leave it on campus wherever you park the bike..

I can't imagine worrying about a lock in Burlington for lunch but a disc lock is good enough and fits in your pocket easily.

I'm leaving a lock at work for my bicycle.. I have a pretty nasty braided cable thing for that and it sucks carrying that around, since I only use it at work why carry it back and forth.

I have a Specialized flexible bike lock. Probably the same nasty braided cable thing ben uses. It tucks under my seat in the trunk just fine, and allows me to either lock my jacket to the triple tree, or slip it through the forks, or swingarm to lock the wheel. The main thing it does is make my bike look like a little more pain in the ass to steal than one that isn't locked.

I think the picture taped to the tank with "I will find you" written on it would be a better deterant though...

    exactly.....

I can't leave the fuggin thing in front of my house cause last year they pushed it over into the passat (I miss that car). I was lucky they didn't push it the other way cause at least all it suffered was a tank scrath and bar-end scratch but the passat didn't fair so well. If they pushed it the other way it woulda been fucked cause it woulda hit the edge of the curb. Not something I want to go through again. Iparked it out front last night in my reserved parking spot in front of the X and got so little sleep cause I wa worried about it even on a Tues night.
That's more of the concern for me around here is someone pushing it over as opposed to someone stealing it. I would mind that added security though. I may put a little note on it and add that they are on camera and I will find tem and kill them may be fun too

Didn't read all the posts so sorry if this has been ruled out. I use a Kryptonite disc lock at bike week and such, usually in stock at the daelership pretty cheap. Make sure you get the reminder cord so you don't Joel your rotors! And the nice thing about Krypto is they are in Canton, Ma. if you ever need a key!
