Today was my first day off in about nine days. I spent it all riding, up into mass, down into ocean drive, etc. Great day. I park on broadway in newport for coffee, parallel behind a car about five feet away from it. I'm in a coffee shop for about five minutes resting, and come back to a kid from the smoke shop that my bike is in front of telling me about how it just got creamed.
An 82 year old man plowed into my bike, throwing it over on it's right side. It snapped the right rearset in fucking half with the rear brake and peg with it, bent my handlebar and front brake lever, broke off the right mirror, scratched the muffler and caused misc. cosmetic damage on both sides. I had to tow it home.
A german foreigner and the old guy picked the bike back up and put it on the kickstand, how nice. Apparently left a note before taking off, but it blew away. The smoke shop dude was a complete witness and took the guys plates (THANK YOU!) and the cops got him and all that, so it should be taken care of. But goddamn, I step off for FIVE minutes and this shit happens. I've had my bike less than a month. I wouldn't be surprised if they total it.
Now I am out a bike til this all gets settled, and even then I'm wondering if I should just total it if I have that option and take the money since I move to georgia in a month.
Absolute shit.

rough week for bikes, at the very least if it is totalled by the insurance company then keep it and then sell it as a project or track bike
Thats what I was thinking. Sorry to hear about it man, sucks.rough week for bikes, at the very least if it is totalled by the insurance company then keep it and then sell it as a project or track bike
Sorry to hear man, that blows...
Probably a good thing you weren't around.
If it were me, and I had been there when that fucker did that, there's be an assault charge thrown in...

man.... folks love to talk tough on the internet. Nobody cares about someone trying to prove how tough they are.
I'm sure if it happened right in front of you, you would not have assaulted the old man. You would have exchanged info and got the insurance process rolling(yes it still sucks). If you would hit him, you're the one that needs to be off the street, not the old guy.
I had this exact thing happen back when I was still in college(read: not an adult yet, but still a kid). I had a brand new sportbike, less than a month old... BAM hit by an old neighbor in its parking space. So I know where Zolden is coming from.
I would hope some self control would be excercised and it would be handled appropriately. Oh I forgot, lots of folks on here aren't even out of school yet.
My opologies.

Really glad you were not on the bike when he ran it over.
No there wouldn't be, I have seen your bike take a hit and you would pick it up, dust it off, and be on your way... that thing is a tankOriginally posted by bmrider

I'm 19 and in college, I wouldn't have assaulted him. I have grown fond of my bike, and when I found it fucked up it was really more of just an intense dissapointment than furious rage. I did scream fuck when I sat on it ready to take off because there didn't seem to be much damage, only to put your right foot on the peg and see it dangling.Originally posted by LiononaLeash

They said he looked really nervous and freaked out, maybe he was afraid of me being the stereotypical biker dude who would chase them down with intent to pulpify. I'm just not like that.
I am glad that the cop, being a biker himself, didn't get me for possibly being over the crosswalk line or being out alone with just my permit...
I'm really torn between seeing if it is able to be saved or just taking the money and buying a new bike next year or something.

When my bike got totalled last year I had a new one in under 2 weeks. Get on the phone with the insurance company and get the adjuster there, once they've seen the bike it's fast, some adjusters can even cut a check on the spot. Good luck.

Unless that frame is fucked, they'll probably fix it and not total it. Of course if you wanted to lay it off to me as atrack bike, you got a sale! LOLOriginally posted by Zolden

Heres a condom. I figured since youre acting like a dick, you should dress like one too.
I real felt bad for you until this part, if you were 5 ft from the car but partially in the cross walk it sounds like you were not actually in your own parking spot. yes...no? If you were not in a parking spot and completely in it, you gotta take some of the blame my friend. You gotta be a defensive parker ya know.Originally posted by Zolden

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about if you want to fix it or total it, the insurance company will make that call for you.
Good luck
I'm sorry please show me where is says you are allowed to ram into a parked car/motorcycle as long as it is parked illegally... maybe she shoudl get a parking ticket but thats it...Originally posted by tonyd

he could have left it in the middle of the road and thats not an excuse for someone to plow into it...you need to be in control of your vehicle at all times...
I'm not saying the old fuck is not responsible for running it over I'm just saying your shit is more likely to get fucked up if you leave it where it is not suppose to be.
bummer bro I hate people in general haha... well atleast those with 4 wheels they have cycle blindness.. well looks like our rides on hold... maybe it's time to get something bigger and better ...![]()

I would hope his insurance company would pony up and cut a check to fix your bike.
If it were me, I'd take the check and sell your bike to Rye.
You'll end up with a decent amount of cash to buy something newer than a 1995 machine. You could probably get something 1999 or slightly newer in good shape.
Let us know how things are working out.

It was only a concern of mine, the cop said it was parked legit and I did nothing wrong. It was five feet behind the car with a crosswalk behind it, the tail of the bike lined up with the yellow on the sidewalk so I figured it was fine. Bikes park parallel in between cars on broadway or in newport all the time, with less than two feet of space on either side... this was way better off so I figured it was all set, but of course you have to expect the unexpected.Originally posted by tonyd

I want to go about ordering parts to get moving on fixing it, but I'm guessing I should wait for the claims adjuster. Also, what I thought was a rearset that snapped was actually called a torque link... the plate bracket that holds the peg/brake lever to the frame. There's some stuff I know I can replace myself easy on it, but shit like the throttle handlebar and all the controls needing to be put on a new handlebar is probably beyond my skills.
