the rider was there for the R1 rally going on this week

BULLETIN: A 39 year old motorcycle rider from Maryland lost his life on the Dragon Thursday morning June 15. The accident occurred at about mile marker 3.5 when the northbound rider went off the road and struck a tree. This is the first death on the Dragon in 2006. Please ride safe so it is the only one this year.

If you look down, you go down. That may be fun at an orgy, but it sucks on a bike

    dragon fatality

I just came back from the Dragon on Monday of this week.
It was just pure insanity over the weekend and I got seriously
spooked a couple of times. Weekends are just too crazy.

Yet on the previous Wednesday, I did ten Dragon runs and had
a ball. I was so sore when I got to my room in Fontana, I could
barely take a shower. Killboy did catch me more than a few times!

I am definitely going back sometime this fall when it cools down
    and the crowds thin out.

    RIP to that rider

is there a Dragon 101 somewhere on the net?

I've driven the BRP (the whole damn thing) in my cage but never been on a bike there; any similarity?

    www.tailofthedragon.com

    www.dealsgap.com

These are two sites that have a wealth of info on the area.

Read all you want though ... the most important things there is
commonsense, a very clear head and ignore the testosterone in
    order to ride your ride.

The last guy that died actually was quoted saying, "I want to clear
the cobwebs out of my head."

I know exactly what he meant by that and nothing can be further
from the truth. I had one 'OH SHIT' moment and got off the
Dragon immediately. You cannot afford to make any mistakes on
    that road.

I quickly found out what my weaknesses were and the road did
challenge me to find and exceed my limits very quickly. Trying to
explain that is like explaining sex to a virgin ... you gotta do it to
find out. There is not a doubt in my mind that I need to do some
track days this summer to overcome those weaknesses.

There is not a bad road in that area, there are many other roads
that can be ridden that are almost as technically challenging and
with much less traffic on them.

I will definitely go there again this fall when the crowds thin out
    and the air gets cooler.

    no similarity whatsoever

BRP, Skyline Drive, Cherohala Parkway are engineered roads, surveyed and laid out with uniform radius curves, uniform shoulders, and well marked, there are no real surprises, you can negotiate the brp @ 75mph or faster

Deals gap, is just a road that was bulldozed along the side of a mountain with no road design criteria, corners are blind, not well marked, decreasing and increasing radius . the majority of the corners have a radius that is much less than any safety standard

if you can average 40mph that is a respectable pace

A few corners make 25 MPH look like a pucker trip with oncoming traffic.

The added element is don't cross the line........

I've caged it and came back to find a ~65 foot long tree across the road, in the dark, all alone.

    Hi-8 somewhere........

If you want to get intimate with it and really push yourself, go in Novemebr around the holidays....GHOST TOWN.
Always pair up....you could go missing for decades.
