    Re: dropped helmet

This may surprise some people but I have crashed and SCUFFED my helmet and still race with it.

I would say that it WILL compress the foam and it WILL compromise the protection of the helmet. BUT to what degree would be difficult to determine without xraying the helemt before and after.

Is it a Polycarbonate (Tupperware bowl) or a Laminate weave (Awesome/Racer) Helmet?

For 20 bucks (maybe 10??) Arai will do an integrity test of dropped helmets. If yours is an Arai, send it in.

The bottom line is nobody knows if it is damaged or not during a crash or a drop. If it falls on concrete from more than few feet I am concerned about it. Its a personal choice though.

I would say its ok because there wasn't a head inside of it that compressed the foam.

    Re: dropped helmet

haha we were talking about this on our ride yesterday.

I dropped mine down the stairs it rolled then hit the wall. So it will be replaced this year.

Ashley i wouldnt worry about the SNELL rating. The M2001/2005 rating is crap. The new Snell M2010/2011 is comparable to ECE (european) and BSI (british) helmet testing. ECE/BSI is like our DOT just 100x better.

Like some people said you don't know how bad it compressed. Me personally ive been riding with it but God forbid if i crash and the foam is already compressed i could get some brain damage.

    shoei will do the same.
at the end of the day, its only you that has to put your head in it. risking it is a personal choice.

u let your friend drop your helmet? did he let u kick him in the balls? what kind of logic is that? like crashing, dropping a helmet is inevitable. only a matter of time.

bottom line is, any impact to a helmet will affect its integrity...to a certain degree of course. but to drop it on purpose just to get over that "fear" is ridiculous

Careful, this board is very hostile towards riders who wear Icon gear.

I'm betting at least 3 people are going to check in with "you're riding with crap anyways, should have replaced it before it hit the deck."

    Re: dropped helmet

I forgot which motorcycle magazine did a G test of at least 2 dozen helmets and found that all SNELL rated helmets because of the way they have to be built to pass the Snell test transfered more G force to the brain then a DOT only helmet.

For example, the ZR1 helmet transfered only 157g's to the brain, while the Scorpion 700 transfered 215 or something like that.

Snell got pissed off and wrote a letter back to the magazine, then they changed their rating. Its all on their website they changed completely how they test helmets.

Straight from Bruce Porter at Arai...i can't tell you how many times I've heard him say it at shows and such in the last year. the only thing you'll do if you drop the helmet without your head in it is scratch the cosmetics or break a vent.

If your head wasn't in it, you don't have to worry about.

If your head is in it and the helmet hits the ground, at least get it looked at because they are designed as a 1-impact tool.

    Re: dropped helmet

So even if it dropped down the stairs it wouldn't compress the foam on the outside part of the helmet, the part that hit the ground? I know the inside of the helmet wouldnt compress but the outside might in the spot where it hit.
