    Question DRZ400 at NHMS?

I'm trying to determine what my 2nd bike (to go along side my Sprint ST) will be, and I would like something that can function as both a Dual Sport for the Vermont country side, and as a motard, potentially for track days at NHMS. Is the DRZ too underpowered to have fun with at a track day? Should I get the DRZ400S and buy motard wheels, or should I get the DRZ400SM and buy dual sport wheels?

Or do I need to go with something like the XR650R and turn that into a motard? I would like to keep this project as cheap as possible, and I'm willing to sacrifice on track performance, as long as I'm not going to be bored out of my mind. Any suggestions or recommendations are welcome.

The s is faster... Good bike to have fun with at NHMS just don't race it.

You could get a CRF 450x which is quicker/lighter than a DRZ.

I think a 650 is TOO big for track duty.

I thought about the CRF but I was worried about it's longevity on the street. As you know, I would be taking it on rides with Mark, so god only knows how many miles I would be putting on it. I don't have the tools or the know-how to rebuild an engine. The S is faster than the SM? I thought the only difference was that the SM had better brakes and a street oriented front fork?

    Re: DRZ400 at NHMS?

You're correct. It's the e that's faster, with the hotter cams and whatnot.

As far as not being bored, I found my drz to be just that, boring. It's not really good at any one thing, but it does alot of stuff alright. Just don't expect wow factor.

Docs 450x is a hoot though. If you can find one with a set of terd wheels, scoop it. Adjusting valves is only intimidating the first time.

I thought it was fun. A little more power would have been good though.

Shit, now I might actually get one haha. I'm not looking to race it, just one or two trackdays a year, with most of the riding being my short commute and some good old fashioned Vermont dual sport riding.

Then I can definitely recommend one.

My bank account hates you I should look for the E and make it what I want? If it has the best engine then that would make sense.

Is that Manny's DRZ? If so, you should mention he spent TenHundred and Eighty bux times 2 to make it somewhat powerfull

Yes, as long as you can plate it. Be sure to get an '01 or later - better suspension.

Eh, it's VT, I think I can plate just about anything. Good to know about the suspension though.

E is only better for some years. Best bet is to find one cheap and then add an fcr 39 pipe and open the airbox 3-3.

Howuch you looking to spend and do you like marchesinis?

If you're looking for reliability and fun factor try a Duke 2 from KTM. I think its a 640 but the LC4 motor is easy to maintain. The duke is the original motard and hooligan bike. It's a streetbike though not a dual sport.
When I sell my 1k next year it def a bike ill be looking at.

    Re: DRZ400 at NHMS?

I loved my 2006 drz400sm. sure it wasnt a beast like an aprilia sxv 550 but wasnt a whole lot slower than my buddies 03 crf450 motard(stock everything). I had a full exhaust and and jetting. I went everywhere with that thing just not really on the highway.

if you get the MRD/SSw exhaust, FCR39 carb Cams and a big bore it will no doubt in my mind keep up with mx motards that arent built extensively. The SM has better front end and swingarm but you can find them on ebay to swap over to an E or S.

They love being in the woods and backroads which are usually next to each other haha. Buy one you'll only regret it for the first week until you actually ride it a lot haha.

    Re: DRZ400 at NHMS?

I've been thinking about selling my DR650 (supermoto). I still have the OEM off road wheels and tires for it too. It's been jetted, Ti GSXR pipe, modded airbox, etc etc. If you're interested I can give you full details.

    Something to think about it...

DR650 supermoto is my other choice.
