    I have a technical question.

I looked at a 1999 900SS today, I think its cheap. ($2750). It has some minor rash on the left side, is due for its 12k valve adjust, and really ought to have a set of tires before seeing VIR in the spring. Has a nice Corbin seat and a pair of D&D pipes that are obnoxious loud.

It had a lot of oil leaking from the front sprocket cover. The guy who had it for sale says that this is a common problem when one of the O rings in the slave cylinder lets go; he also pointed out that the fluid in the clutch master was black like motor oil, which he says is also indicative of this problem.

Anybody heard of that issue before? Is it hard/expensive to repair?

First... if the slave is leaking then its not oil... it's brake/clutch fluid and it eats away at paint.

Second, Yes the slaves leaking and going bad is a common problem on older Ducs.

There can be cheap fixes by rebuilding the slave cylinder, but most people simply upgrade to an aftermarket slave... which costs between $150-$200.

If it's leaking oil, that'd be a countershaft seal I'd think. If the slave has decided to let go, STM clutch slaves are a wonderful upgrade.

Yeah, I was not really getting the connection between the oil in the clutch master and the oil leak on the bottom of the bike; is there a hydraulic line that long on that bike?

If its the countershaft seal, is that one of these freaky spendy Ducati fixes?

I guess I'm not sure of your question... yes there is a hydraulic line that runs from the clutch master cylinder down to the slave cylinder which is right next to the front sprocket.

    That answers my question perfectly.

Do all bikes do that? It was strange seeing the clutch fluid the same color as motor oil.

Lastly, its leaking *oil*, which is coming out of the front sprocket cover - does that definitely mean its a countershaft seal, or are there other (common) things that cause that?

Yes, it passes through the sprocket cover.
I need to do mine. There is also a little flex boot in there that gets beat.
Easy fix and I have the bike on microfiche, if you end up getting it I can get a copy of it off to ya.
It's a fun bike. Not the most power but really fun to ride.

I found that if I used too much chain lube, it would run down the inside of the plastics by the front sproket and look like an oil leak. I'd think if it was brake fluid you'd see a corrosive mess of paint and plastic instead of oil, but I replaced my slave before it leaked. I still get the black clutch fluid even after swapping out the stock slave. When it gets black, I just change it out, only takes about 5 minutes.

If the clutch slave is blown and leaking all over the place, its likely the clutch pushrod was spinning in its bore. This tears up the o-rings on the pushrod and will cause motor oil to leak out past the pushrod. If the pushrod is bent and warped, I think its like 150$ or so.

Still, thats a good deal on a '99 SS.

P.S. If your doing all this, its not a bad time to replace your throwout bearing on the pressure plate. Its 5$ and takes about 5 minutes.
