Why is it always someone elses bike??

Alright, I've accepted it, my dad will never let me live it down. hahaha
Almost 2 months ago I high-sided in a corner up the road from my dads place while on his bike ('07 Bandit GSF1250 w/ less than 2k miles). I paid the deductible, and the bike will be back to pristine shape soon.
But, that won't stop the old man from ragging on me. lol
That was the first time I went down on the road (not a big deal in the sand pits lol). It couldn't have been my beat to hell '86 VFR. No big deal, I can live with a few more scratches, straighten the lever, move on. Nope, it was someone else's pristine bike. Doh!

Anyone else been there? Laid down a friends (or worse, family members) bike?

I blew up my dad's bike. Put a hole right through the piston about the size of a quarter.

I very rarely will ride someone elses bike. Mostly because no one will let me ride their bike!

But from my perspective only two things can happen - both bad!
    1. I can do what you did. Never an endearing thing to have happen
    2. I could really love it and end up hating my ride. And financially, I'm better off not buying a new bike whenever that happens.

Showing a friend how to ride I cut a corner too sharp in a parking lot on paint and dumped it at about half a mile an hour. Made me look like I knew what I was doing... on his new to him sv with only 1000 miles...

Re: Why is it always someone elses bike??

A co-worker of mine took the bosses BMW for a ride with a girl he was sweet on. He got pulled over for looking suspicious (he was slowly cruising around a very high end area showing her the home he worked on). The guy, being who he is, got all pissed for getting pulled over. He pulled to the side of the road, threw down the side stand, and stormed back to talk to the officer. The officer got a great view of the bike tipping over with the poor pillion rider trying to balace it from the back. While the bike was being repainted he had a new rear tire put on. Chel picked it up when the work was complete and accellerated too hard coming off a stop sign on the way home. Laid it down again. I don't think he ever rode it again.

How? The piston in that thing isn't even AS BIG as a quarter?!

It's about a half dollar size. I'll post a picture if I remember.

Andy (and You I believe) pop started it in reverse. The oil injection pump filled with air. I never thought to bleed it out again. Ran it, had a small little heat sieze, bled it, ran it, got it up to 60 and it went poof.

Ian gave me his stock top end, so it cost me nothing more then time and I have the piston hanging on a wall as a "Kill token"

Never been in that situation but I don't let other people ride my bike so I don't expect them to let me ride theirs. I don't want to get into the conversation, "I let you ride mine so let me ride yours." It's my first "new" bike so I'm hella anal about it.

Re: Why is it always someone elses bike??

I am old enough to have experienced both sides of this situation - and I can tell you that, no matter which side of the equation you happen to be on - it sucks.
I am now reluctant to ride other folks bikes, but I still do. When I do it, though, I always remember the feelings that are associated with this type of situation, and I never forget that it belongs to somebody else (ie - I do not ride like an idiot). I also still loan my bikes out to others on rare occasions, but I get mentally prepared by telling myself that if it comes back in the same condition as it left, I got lucky.
Of course, all of these experiences were with dirt bikes or low value street bikes, and if I owned a $10,000+ street bike, I would be very careful about who I let ride it. The odds are really stacked against you, but the risks really do diminish with rider age, up to a point...

I think the risk diminishes with youth. We have better reflexes and know much more than any old person. Old people are used to slow bikes.

Preteen, haven't you thrown someone else's bike down the track?

    AND you own an EX.

I wouldn't call it throwing...it was more like laying down softly. And I won't have an EX for much longer...you wanna buy it? It's fast.

Of course you do. At a posted age of 19, you have much to learn. What's that old saying "To be old and wise, you first must be..."??
I would also offer you this piece of advice: If you do get offered the opportunity to ride someone else's bike, ...Don't do it. Cherish your friendships, for they are what you will be placing at risk.

Too late. Glenn let me borrow his bike to race this past season. Yep, I crashed it in T1.
