End of an Era -- "Patina", my '93 M900, dead at 265K

She was still running fine, and had more miles in her, but got taken out last week by a hit-and-run minivan.
The minivan pulled out from a McDonalds exit, directly onto the main street, and directly across my path. I was going pretty close to 40mph.
I remember the flash of movement from my right, and hitting the brakes; I have no idea how much speed I was able to scrub off before impact.
I then remember nothing until I awoke while being loaded into the ambulance, some minutes later.
The minivan driver fled the scene, but has since been located and arrested.

I am, astoundingly, practically unhurt. I took a massive thumping, and lots of bruises and bumps. I’ll need a new helmet.
But none of my own personal pieces parts were broken, and I will be fully healed and operational in a couple of weeks.
They checked me out in the ER, took a few pictures, nodded their heads, and sent me on my way.
My wife’s ’95 M900 will be my transport from then until I figure out what to buy next.

I’m very sad to see Patina go; she has been an amazingly good bike for the last 24 years.
I am also eager for the next phase. There are a lot of astounding bikes out there these days.

Below: mashed front end, broken frame.

I’m glad they found the minivan driver. Feel better soon, and now you have a nice opportunity to get a new bike, not that that’s really your thing.

Wow, exactly how my Monster went out at 50k miles. Glad you were unhurt. Likely going to be just a tad sore in 2 days.

As an "older" guy, I can tell you the pain will take a few days to show up, so take it easy.

The bike was a classic, fight for fair value, as it isn't actually replaceable.

The guilty party had no insurance, and has no assets. You can't squeeze blood from a stone.
Insurance will pay me a couple grand, and I'll start saving and testriding, to figure out what bike I will have 250K+ on by 2040.

This happened a little over a week ago now (30Oct17), so I've already done the stiff-and-sore-and-sleep-for-4-days-straight kind of thing.
I actually think I'll feel well enough to go for a short ride tomorrow.

Things are not perfect, but they're pretty damn good, considering the possible alternatives.

WOW. Sorry to hear 'Patina' is gone. I am glad to hear you're OK. Like others will say, the aches and pain will come. Take it easy. Make sure you claim the helmet, jacket, gloves, loss of wages, etc. When I got hit I got all that covered plus a fair amount of pain and suffering.

Yes, that's all in process. Other than the helmet, the gear was fine and I'll keep using it. I'm claiming the helmet, towing, train ticket back home from Illinois (where it happened), lost income from 2 days off work, anything I get charged for the ER visit, etc. If they offer me a pain-and-suffering claim, I'll be happy to take it. Oddly enough, part of what I paid for that bike with 24 years ago was a few thousand bucks from a pain-and-suffering settlement from a car accident involving an uninsured driver in a stolen car.

I'm sad to see the bike go, but can't really complain much. I certainly got my money's worth out of her.

Sorry to hear Phil. That's a damn shame to hear about the old girl, I've watched with morbid curiosity to see just how far she'd go. Glad you're alright, there damn sure ain't no replacing you.

Based on your past experience hopefully keep it a Duc, see what you can squeeze out of a modern one
