I much prefer the 2nd rendition. I guess i will never quite get it though. Trying to make a bike with that lump look light is not going to happen.

this thread has me kind of questioning whether this might be better 40th present to myself than a wing.

I'm feeling pretty good, after all that. I'm not yet at full strength and endurance, but it's improving gradually.
I have the New England Winter Fitness Program coming to help me with that (shoveling, roof raking, etc.).

Damn man, glad you're okay. Can't imagine what was going through their heads taking off like that.... presumably not much.

Re: End of an Era -- "Patina", my '93 M900, dead at 265K

I think just sheer panic. This wasn't intentional; she had no idea I was there. So she pulls out, and hears a huge thump. She does not have insurance. She does not have a driver's license. She doesn't have any assets. She does have a very poor driving record already. She's driving someone else's car, and that person doesn't have insurance either. So she panics and runs away.

I got a call from the investigator yesterday for a statement. They are charging her with two felonies, one for leaving the scene, and one for "obstruction of justice" -- because when they did catch her, she lied to the officers about her identity. I think her life wasn't under much control already, and now she's really screwed. It sounds to me like she is not very adept at making good decisions, and whichever of her friends owns the car probably isn't either.

I'd rather be me than her.

Hopefully her next bad decision doesn't wind up actually killing someone. You're a bigger man than I taking this with such grace!

Now mind you, I'm not making any arguments in favor of letting her off. I have been as clear as possible with the relevant authorities, to help ensure she gets convicted, and I hope that a couple of felonies will keep her off the streets for a while. And maybe convince her to learn to be a better driver. I don't see any value in burdening myself with trying to do more about it than that, though.

I have a well set up SF848 if you'd like to test it. I think you have enough miles under your belt ;-)

BTW, I think Ducati USA may give you a lot more than a couple of grand for the bike....you should contact them. At least for a museum spot and a story

Thank you very much for the offer. I may well give you a call and take you up on that when the spring comes and I start serious evaluation.

Do you have any solid to base it on that Ducati USA will give me something decent for what's left of Patina, or are you just saying they would because you think they should?

I would obtain a judgement against her for a few tens of thousands for pain and suffering. Scumbags like that have a habit of scratching million dollar scratch tickets or getting big settlements for accidents or inheriting a few thousands acres of land. Id stake my claim for a piece of any eventual pie if I were you, just in case.

Id sue her friend who owned the van, also. It wasnt an accident, it was a series of negligent actions almost resulting in homicide. Id love to rip into her on the stand and get a nice big financial judgement against her, as well as a prison sentence.

You have the original Monster and I doubt anyone in the world had as many miles (400k kilometers?) as you. I have seen the Volvo and Subaru commercials about high mile cars. I’d contact Ducati marketing both worldwide and USA. I have no first hand experience but people should know about your bike - a museum piece in the Ducati museum for sure!

Get in touch in the Spring. I’m in the Boston area.

Too bad there was no insurance policy associated with the plate.

Got hit head-on (in a car) by a drunk driver with no license (after three DUI’s), who’d “borrowed” a license plate for his car from a friend. His friend’s insurance company had to pay for all the repairs. The insurance went with the plate, even though wrong car, wrong driver, etc. USAA handled all that for me. Don’t know what happened to the driver, who at 12:30 in the afternoon was too drunk to stand up unassisted. Never asked to testify, and was happy to move on.

They’re out there, sad about the bike but glad Phil’s personal Angel* was on the job.

    * And a lot of experience probably helped.

When my wife and I divorced, about 18 months ago, she gave me her 1995 M900 Monster, since mine was dead, and she didn't think she'd be riding much without me.
So that's what I'm riding now. Once I get my finances in better order, I'm leaning toward getting a new Ducati 939 SuperSport.

Ugh. Divorce sucks. Looking forward to seeing a supersport with 200k on it! They seem to be very overlooked for some reason.

Re: End of an Era -- "Patina", my '93 M900, dead at 265K

Thanks, y'all. The divorce was, and is, reasonably amicable. I ended up buying her car afterwards as well (the red Mini Cooper S in the picture). I've had it about a year, first car I've bought for transportation since 1988. Last winter I had a job project in Minneapolis; I got there on the bike in October, and thought maybe a car would be a good idea for a Minnesota winter (that got down to -25F!).

Below is a pic of how I got to Minneapolis on the Duc in October, which also shows why I'm looking at sport-tourers. I'm traveling more these days, and carrying more stuff, and the Monster's limits are being pushed hard. And yeah, whatever I buy, which is probably going to be a 939 SuperSport S, I plan to turn over 250K on in about the year 2040.

I was looking hard at the Motus MST, but they've gone out of business. I've checked out pretty much everything else in the current or recent sport-touring field. The MotoGuzzi Norge or Griso are still longshot possibilities. The KTM 1290GT was very tempting, but I can't find *any* data on KTMs with over 100K miles -- apparently nobody does that. The last two I haven't tested yet that I want to are the Kawasaki H2 SX SE, and the Honda VRF1200.
