    EX-500 Track Guys Come here

    Hey folks!
My wife is itching to get a new R6 and I've been wanting a track bike for a while. Now I've noticed quite a few of you have EX-500's. I figured if she wants a new one, I'll just steal the Ninja and make it a track bike.
So I pose this question. What's she like on the track? What mods do you guys do to them? As of right now the only mods it has are steel braided brake lines, and a Muzzy exhaust. I've done 2 trackdays with my R1. So I hope I wouldn't hate it. Though I really wanted a newer 600 for the track, this is the best and most cost effective way to get a trackbike.
    Thanks for you input guys
    Brandon

    O by the way it's a 96.

With a muzzy exhaust you arent eligible for PTwins. Its basically stock or nothing. The first half of the year I ran it with only stainless steel brake lines and upgraded brake pads. Since then I've added an EBC rotor and some suspension work, but essentially you can run them pretty well bone stock.

I don't want to enter races though. Just use it as a track whore.

Re: EX-500 Track Guys Come here

Like I say, I was racing the first part of the season just bone stock, so its not out of the question. Airtech makes fairings if you dont wanna mess up the street ones. I threw an EBC rotor on, that helped the stopping a bit (probably not "necessary" for track days), the suspension is fine relatively, I was into the 1:29s on 17 year old stock suspension. If you want to upgrade you can go the usual routes for the shock, and things like racetech emulaters up front. Basically the only thing you might need for track days is new tires.
The stock exhaust can bottom out quite often on the track at race pace, so I dunno how much lower aftermarkets sit under the bike, so that might be something to investigate.

No rearsets? I've heard of people doing swingarm mods to change rims to accomidate a 180 rear

I was on stockers all last year, recently just upgraded to woodcrafts. And I've never heard of going to a 180. The swingarm swap is to convert from a 16" rear wheel which the pre 94's had to a 17" which all the post 94s have. The 17s have a lot more choices when it comes to tires. Not to say a 180 isnt done, I just hadnt heard of it. 150s are plenty fine for me.

Rearsets are a good upgrade. Racetech emulators upfront with the correct springs for your weight, and a penske shock are the best upgrades.

Don't touch the motor. It's slow, and you can't change that. It does give you incentive to corner faster. Some good brake pads, HH compuond are nice, but don't expect any stopping power. Just think of it as more incentive to enter the corners faster...

Putting a 180 on is unnecessary and will probably cause more harm than good.

For track-day duty, a stock bike is perfectly fine.

    Rearsets?

My best is in the 1:24's and I'm running stock rearsets. Save the money for more trackdays and decent tires!

Yah, I like the stock rearsets, at least until I got my form better. I was dragging them through damn near every corner, if they didnt fold I probably wouldve crashed. Now that my body position is better, I havent touched once. So now itll make me feel better going to woodcrafts.

And while we're on the subject, are emulators something I can put in properly myself, or something I should send to Peter.

Dude, How much do you weigh? Most people are dragging the stock pegs at the 1:30 mark or sooner. Rearsets also give you better feel. I wouldn't discount them.

If you have NO money, then leave it stock, I agree. BUT The bike is so much more rewarding to ride with these basic upgrades. It's a rockinghorse in the transitions with the stock stuff.

Im 145 pounds of sheer madness, and I'm consistantly in the 1:29s and havent dragged them in a while, the exhaust on the other hand I drag everywhere.
The only thing I drag the last 2 weekends was my toe going to upshift coming out of the bowl, but no pegs at all.

Low 130's, high 120's. That would probably explain it.

Dolla, emulators are cake to install. Biggity and me put them in our lead horses in about an hour.

Two retards are better than one.

No special tools, just a little drilling, filing (to smooth the holes out) and reassembly. You'll need a bench vise to make installing the new seals a lot easier. And a couple chunks of 2x4.

Are the EBC rotors really that much of an improvement over stockers with good HH pads?

Re: EX-500 Track Guys Come here

From what I've heard (either from Paul or BJ Worsham) EBC rotors don't do much other than last longer & aren't as prone to warping. That was the whole argument for allowing them in PTwins. Originally I guess they weren't approved.

The EX is the biggest piece of crap I have ever ridden, and there has yet to be a time riding it that I didnt come off the track with a huge smile on my face.

But its still a piece of crap.
