    expensive tape!

Multi-million dollar bikes still use duct tape to control temps!!??

Honda must be cutting costs to develop the new 250 4-stroke class

    Re: expensive tape!

The government has a part number for duct tape as part of the repair kits on certain vehicles.

Duct tape has its uses regardless of how expensive something can be.

old school t-stat is just suprising to me. I'd have thought they had a computer controlled electric water pump that had a fresh cup of esspresso ready when you pull into the pits.

    LOL

True. Maybe they were fine-tuning to within a degree....could be coldspots in the radiator causing flow issues......I just ride 'em.

    Re: expensive tape!

I used Duct tape instead of a thermostat on my GP bike on cold and rainy days. It can control temps fairly accurately, BUT, if you find youself in a drafting battle, then the temps will rise out of your control because of the decreased flow. That's why I imagined them having computer controlled t-stats that could keep things running to the degree and account for changing conditions.

Come to think of it, Rossi's bike overheated a few times because he wasn't running out front. On a hot day, my idea wouldn't work though, because you can't make cool air out of hot air (quickly enough).

NASCAR does it too...watching Daytona Sunday and they were talking about taping up a front spoiler to let the engine get a littler hotter....

    funny!

Paul, you sure that's duct tape?
It just looks to me like lines on the radiator.

    Re: expensive tape!

I would have thought that was foil (actual metal with adhesive) tape to stop debris from penetrating the radiator.

No, it's duct tape. It stops air from flowing through the radiator. It indicates that the bike has no thermostat. It's often needed in rainy, cool conditions to keep a race bike in the right temp range for making power.

Is there a specific formula to it (how much area covered in tape) or is it more a trial and error/ experience thing? This is very interesting that such a simple solution still appears to be the best one!

trial and error, baby! Very high tech...

edit: OK maybe that wasn't the right expression for the circumstances...:embarrassed:

    Re: expensive tape!

I like the 4' x 4' sheets of duct tape they use in Nascar to hold the cars together after a crash. Watch everyone get out of the way when the one crew member clears the wall holding onto the corners and diving onto the hood.
