Explain this Salt thing to me....

Saw a guy in an Audi R8 today. All I could think about was the salt water bath he was giving that thing. Must be nice to be too rich to give a fuck.

Or perhaps he is one of those people who always wanted a nice car and purchased one to drive and maintain and not be a garage queen - what if its his only car. If I owned one I would absolutely drive it all year that why they make all wheel drive.

The whole purpose of a performance car is to use it for its performance. A hell of a lot of good 400HP does in snow, AWD or not.

If you can afford an R8, I'm pretty sure you can afford a decent winter DD that has all the comforts the R8 does without all the performance.

I have lived in the North East for most of my life. I drive every day and rarely have to drive in the snow during the winter.

I recall that my Grade School science teacher once asked us "What 2 things are required for rust and corrosion to occur?" Nobody knew. He went on the explain that there are things at the bottom of the arctic ocean that have not rusted yet, and there are things out in the deserts that do not rust or corrode for a long time. The answer was: Moisture, and heat.
So, salt alone is not much of a problem, but combined with moisture, and engine heat, the salt only serves to accelerate the rust and corrosion.
It still doesn't stop me from riding, but, then, I do not own a $10,000 motorcycle. Yet. I am going to change that next year as I seek out a 'Wing, or some other large comfortable touring bike. Whatever I end up with, I will not be riding it once the salt hits the roads. I intend to also own a small dual sport (CRF250L?) for that duty.

there is one and only one thing that causes rust, oxygen, without oxygen, you can put your ferrous material in as much heat and moisture as you want, without oxygen, it cannot oxidize

salt, heat, water are things that impliment the oxidization process, oxygen is still key

That must be why rally cars have the turbocharger? Power is still useful with traction. And traction comes from fancy tires and AWD.
But I'll agree that in all likelihood the guy just doesn't know any better.
