external charging system for my V-strom

I acquired a one off setup from another V-stromer that returned his Strom to stock when he sold it

only gotta drill 3 holes then its bolt on & debugged, I'm gonna set it up a little different instead of deleting the stock charging system, I'm gonna retain it and use the external for accessories independent of the stock system. Means will have to have a 2nd battery. My plan is modifying the exhaust from dual to single then I have place for battery box and larger battery with cranking amps to jump start myself in extreme cold

here is thread of development http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,15655.0.html

I've got to admit, that looks, well, not so great, but not bad, appearance wise, but it should certainly address the output concerns you have had.

the alternator is rated for 65 amps/875 watts, more then double the stock system, it helps with some of my cold weather riding concerns, as well as a backup plan for a less than 100% reliable oem charging system

Nope. We'll be retro'ing an ATV plow for wing-use over the summer. True story...

Re: external charging system for my V-strom

Now that the first LED headlights are hitting the market, I suspect the people looking for more available output from the V-Strom will replace those instead. Not many people are willing to put up with the external setup, which is considered ingenious by some and a kluge by others.

For some reason, along with all its' other problems the DL1000 seems to have a less reliable charging system than the DL650. 87% of DL650 owners had no problems with the charging system compared to 64% of DL1000 owners responding to this poll. But many of those have DL1000 problems were 2002 owners.

yep, just like hacking HID bulbs in reflectors designed for H4s, peeps will put LEDs in

while I will take advantage of the capability of additional lighting, my main purpose is cold weather riding, heat and the ability to jump myself

No doubt that is the way the cheapskates will approach it.

But now that the R1250GS and other bikes have OEM LED headlights, there will be proper retrofit kits that replace the reflector assembly. Perhaps there will even be a whole-bike retrofit kit to replace al lthe bulbs with LED's, obviating the need for more power.

Or not, the number of people who know the charging system doesn't have the power they need and buy it anyway is pretty small.

its only been the last couple years that more people have been looking for amps. until the new tigers, tenere, & stelvio, none of the adventure bikes other than BMW had more than 300-400 watts total

even with my combined 400+875, I think I'm still shy of a Goldwing's alternator output, iirc, their something like 110 amps, bigger than most cars

    $250 for an aftermarket 95 Amp (1,140 W) alternator - bolts in for $250.

Stock alternator on older GW's is 35 A (420 W) and doesn't charge at idle.

The fuel pump and injectors ate up the reasonable extra power

If I put 2 1156 halogens in the voltage goes below 12V when I stop

Putting in a brand new battery for this season
