Extra virgin olive oil, where are the bargains

    I'll use either motul 7100. or mobil 1 4t.

Best price I found was autozone $11 for a quart of mobil 1. Anyone finding better prices?

Mobil 1 is available at Wal Mart for around $24 for a 5 quart jug. Always has been.

    $11 a quart? wtf. That's rape.

    300v is better than 7100.

I believe MTAG or TTD was running a 50% special for their customers.

I believe oil is oil and if it's clean it will do its job. Synthetic is a waste of money.

Amsoil is at the track during any race weekend. It's the best oil you can buy, check the tests. It's right there in your price range.

From wikipedia (below). To your credit, all of these say "citation needed" except for "better chemical and sheer stability.

All I know is, I have a car with a 10,000 oil change interval (with synthetic oil), that was unheard of decades ago. I'd be willing to bet that's due to advancements in the oil, not just the engine.

With what I remember from Organic Chemistry in college, I would imagine you can make a much more pure, consistent product by synthesizing an oil than through fractional distillation (conventional oil).

Now, the guys who buy synthetic oil at ~$10-20 per quart then change their oil every track day....
    Advantages[edit]

The technical advantages of synthetic motor oils include:

    • Better low- and high-temperature viscosity performance at service temperature extremes[citation needed]
    • Better (higher) Viscosity Index (VI)[citation needed]
    • Better chemical and shear stability [5]
    • Decreased evaporative loss[citation needed]
    • Resistance to oxidation, thermal breakdown, and oil sludge problems[citation needed]
    • Possibility to extended drain intervals, with the environmental benefit of less used oil waste generated[citation needed]
    • Improved fuel economy in certain engine configurations[citation needed]
    • Better lubrication during extreme cold weather starts[citation needed]
    • Possibly a longer engine life[citation needed]
    • Superior protection against "ash" and other deposit formation in engine hot spots (in particular in turbochargers and superchargers) for less oil burnoff and reduced chances of damaging oil passageway clogging.[citation needed]
    • Increased horsepower and torque due to less initial drag on engine[citation needed]
    • Improved Fuel Economy (FE) - from 1.8% to up to 5% has been documented in fleet tests[unreliable source?]

    Disadvantages[edit]

The disadvantages of synthetic motor oils include:

    • Substantially more expensive (per volume) than mineral oils.
    • Potential decomposition problems in certain chemical environments (predominantly in industrial use.)[citation needed]

Oh yeah? You're wrong and I know better.... wait, is this an oil thread? Oops, almost got sucked into it. Your bike is worth whatever oil you think it is. Non detergent 30 weight from a yard sale or 300V after every race, whichever floats your boat. Keep it full and change it once in a while.

I use this stuff in everything. No looking through owners manuals. And if you read the description it even says good for motorcycles. $19.50 each if bought in a case of three.

I was waiting for one of NESR's Rotella fans to speak up.

"Designed for virtually all four-stroke engines, this motor oil can be used on motorcycles, tractor trailers, heavy-duty pickups, school buses and more."

"This synthetic multi-grade engine oil meets the latest service requirements and is a smart buy for the owners of diesel transports"

Yeah, that inspires a lot of confidence to the owner of an expensive motorcycle who loves his bike. If it's good for a school bus and diesel transports, it's got to be good for my motorcycle, of course. I am sure it's a good oil, but anything that is "designed for all" is usually very mediocre for all.

It is the friction modifiers that you do not want in motorcycle oil. They do not work with wet clutches. That is the primary and only difference between car oils and motorcycle oils. Mobil 1 does not have the friction modifiers either.

Decades ago? I owned a few 80's BMW's over the years and even way back then they were stating 7500 miles between oil changes and nary a mention of synthetic in their owner's manuals.

Those 70's and 80's bikes had tachometers that went all the way up to 7500 RPM. Does spinning at twice that speed require better oil?

I was getting ready to ask about the Rotella angle. I've seen that pop up in a couple different threads to the point that I was looking for the :sarcasm: emoticon.

Serously.....does anyone else wonder why this forum has a but nothing for sarcasm?

Re: full synthetic oil, where are the bargains

While a different application, I ran semi-synth in my last car which had a turbo. At 40k I had to tear the oil pan off to remove the sludge. I started using synthetic and ran it to 140k no issues. Now turbo chargers can get hot well know, but I figure if the synthetic can handle that and non-synth cannot, synthetic must do a little better overall.

I did not declare any such thing. By your own admission everything in that Wiki post, with the exception of one line of information, has "citation needed" which means, yes the information is there but it's still bullshit and still requires facts/ scientific studies/ etc in order to back it up.

Sheer properties have been proven. The rest of it is subject to scrutiny.
