well it finally happened...after 8 years of riding i wrecked

i work overnights at a hospital in boston. Heading home this morning a little before 7 am, driving on the vfw pkwy. Approach a green light which turns to yellow, i say to myself " i'll make this no problem"....well the car in front of me had different plans and abruptly applied their brakes. My back tire locks up, and fish tails to the right, next thing i wake up laying on my back in the middle of the road with people standing around looking down on me. I get taken back to the ER of the hosp I work, on a back board. Still barely able to move i try to start making sense of what happened, all that was making sense was my head was pounding, could not move my left arm and both of my legs felt like they were burning (road rash). My helmet did its job, the riding jacket i usually only wear when its cold out did its job, and here i am sitting at home, no broken bones but still with minimal movement with my left arm / shoulder. It looks like I will be able to replace most of the parts on my own: tail piece cracked up a bit, right fairing, right foot beg and brake, right frame slider and bar end and possibly front nose and headlight. Bike still starts up fine, was told one of the Troopers who responded stood it up pretty quick. Insurance appraiser comes tomorrow, lets see what happens....oh i dont think i will ever ride squid again no matter what!

How fast were you going that you rear ended a car and ended up knocked out?
I'm not asking to be a dick, I'm asking because I'm moving pretty fast on my daily commute.

    Same, heal up.

I can't imagine not commuting on a bike. My anual mileage would drop to maybe 25% of what it is now.

Gear up and enjoy the good days, I say.

Sorry about the crash, but glad you're mostly OK. When I read:

I was thinking that guy's pretty brave, replacing his own arm and shoulder like that. I'd definitely have a doctor do that if it were me.

Hope you're all better soon! (and the bike too)

Which hospital are you working out of? Glad this wasn't worse than it is. What injuries did you sustain? What's the story with your shoulder/arm not moving? I too work at a local Boston hospital. Let me know if you have any questions about your recovery. Kind of my area of expertise.

    Ugh. That sucks, man.
Same scenario happened to me once back when I first started driving and the car in front of me jammed on the brakes for a yellow light.... But I got lucky. The only accident involved was in my pants.

Now, every time I see a light go yellow I cover the brakes & watch traffic in front of me like a HAWK!
I bet you'll do the same thing now, too Sorry ya learned that lesson the hard way. Heal up soon.

Yikes. Glad to hear you'll make it all the way back. Someday you can ride as slow as I do.

Re: well it finally happened...after 8 years of riding i wrecked

Alright so i sorta forgot i posted this up on here, musta been from my head banging off the ground who needs short term memory anyways. SO to clarify I did not end up hitting the car in front of me. Brakes ended up locking up (i think) and i pretty much just got tossed thru the air and landed hard. Bike went down on the right side and slid a bit. I was probably going between 34-45. Insurance totaled the bike so just waiting on the paper work this week to see how much it will be to buy it back. Literally all i would need to fix for it to be "street ready" would be the right foot peg/bracket. SO most likely I will be scouring the kawi forums looking for some plastics.

Re: well it finally happened...after 8 years of riding i wrecked

When getting a salvage bike back it must be inspected by the state police. It can't have any damage for the inspection. Anyway, I had a very similar crash except there was a turn right before the light so when I flipped I was hurled into the grass on the outside of the turn, not the pavement and car in front. I'm glad you are OK. The lesson I learned was don't touch the rear brake in a panick.

as far as the inspection goes for MSP, its mostly all cosmetic (however they probably wouldn't like the shorty exhaust i have on it. we'll see i guess, insurance did total it at a pretty good amount plus going to have my agent try and fight for a few hundred more.

Glad you're ok man. I saw your pics on your FB first before this thread (haven't been on here in a while). As for the rear brake comments, I could not agree more. Rear brakes (in my experience on the street) cause more harm than good. I think you have a SS braided brake line on your rear brake if I remember correctly?

When I had my Honda, I put SS braided on the front and rear. I was constantly locking up the rear brake all the time. When I got the GSXR I purposely left the rear line alone and kept the OEM rubber line. I have yet to lock it up. Once you get the bike back on the road my recommendation to you is to put the rubber line back on the rear. It will help reduce the chances of a lockup in my opinion.
