What about insurance companies using transmitters to record how much time, what time of day, and how fast you are driving to prorate your insurance, that was shot down by the feds....

If this stuff really happens i'll just have to keep building older cars that can be grandfathered into not needing all the hoopla and OBD stuff!

Cali voted against the insurance thingy, at least that's what I remember

At first I liked the idea cause I was paying $2500 a year for insurance , but was only driving 15 miles a week and at low volume times of day. 780 miles a year to and from work, now that's like a day and a half

    I am paranoid

I also have very low self worth

I can't figure out why they want to get me

Soon it will be just too easy for a microprocessor controlled motorcycle not to communicate.

Probably the best hing anyone could do is have a national driver strike day where everyone simply went the exact "posted" speed limit all day. Then even the "security Moms" would realize what absolute bullsh*t big brother is

"There will be such a ewe and cry though out the land that they shall surely let my people go" and don't call me Sherly

If you want to be paranoid and look where this is going... it is obvious.

Eventually they are going to try and make all the vehicles computer controlled.

My guess is highway first. Traffic will move way faster, and accidents will be greatly, greatly reduced. (Except for when the system fucks up or some bonehead gets on the highway who disabled the system, and then it will be ugly) People will fight and fight and claim their freedom is being taken away, etc.. but eventually it will happen, and after a while people will get used to it as they read a book or watch TV while the computer does the work, and your stress is greatly reduced.

Just like with Air traffic control.. once you get to a certain traffic density and the technology is there, it will happen.

I know, I know, you will say, "But I'm a good driver, I'm better than a computer." Well the thing is everyone in the country is a better than average driver if you ask them, and yet the accidents pile up, and no matter how good at controlling your car you are, you can't control anyone else's car, which makes the computer better in the long run.

I'm not sure I care all that much if Johny cabs are allowed to drive 150mph on the freeway and there are no traffic jams.

    Would you?

devils advocate: Who wouldn't mind being able to take a nap on the way to work?

...it would be fine with me if they automated the commute to work AS LONG AS i could still have recreational driving time...

If it were that way, I would be that more productive in my job, not to say for other people it would be good, but for me going stop to stop all day I wouldn't have to do paper work at home instead of playing with my kids, or spending time with them.

But the Black box is a nono in my eyes right now because I have to speed so I can get more stuff done in a day

    Ben VFR

I bet your sorry the old soviet union and red china did not create the controlled workers paradise your looking for..

Right after computer roads will be "is this an government authorized trip".

Central control equals societal stagnation and ultimately failure.

I call on the rest of you to not just glumly sit back and hope its not in your life time.

Everyone in the government is only worried about themselves. They would laugh at you (in private) if you said you had rights because sheep don't have rights. They don't care about excessive rules because they don't really have to abide by them. All their tripos will be authorized and it will be nicer for the elite to be on roads they chased your grand children off. Where will you be when your Great Grand daughter has to do the local commisar so she can get her travel permit.

Yes more paranoid rambling but if you motorcyclists that know its safe to ride down the expressway at 100 buy into this "government is good and right" what the heck are the apartment dwellers downtown buying.

The man has a point, it will be nicer

That's it, begone all you tired huddled masses, you can huddle on the bus. Your betters need the roads. Thanks so much.

Ummm Yeah.. you don't understand highly complex systems very well do you...

It would take millions of operators to monitor and approve each trip. Even a communist country wouldn't try do do so, the economic costs would be insane.

There is not even an inherent need for the system to be able to track an individual vehicle. I bet it will be there for law enforcement reasons, but there is no need for it.

Hate to tell you but the police can already track you through your cell phone and listen in on your conversations. The technology is there, I've worked on some of it in the past. We have successfully implemented that technology already without abusing it, we can do the same with transportation technology.

Funny the people you like to vote for are the ones who will push for monitoring and tracking, they are the same ones that pushed it through for the telephone systems.

Tell me Rich, what values do the Libertarians share with the modern Republican party?

Other than gun control, I can't think of a single one. The modern Republican party is fiscally liberal and socially conservative. Increased government spending and restrictions on indiividual rights. Seems to me like they would be the polar opposite of the Libertarian party, as I understand it.
