    Frame Sliders=Good or Baaad????

This question is mainly aimed toward the trackday riders and racers but all riders street, stunt, etc...) are welcome to voice an opinion. My question is, "do you have frame sliders on your bike?" If yes, why? If no, why not? What's your take on them?

I'm in a bit of a debate with someone who is anti-frame sliders because he says they can do waaay more harm to your bike than if you crashed without them. He mainly stated that sliders can contribute to bent frames. So I'd like to hear from all of you.

I like to chrome my bike out since chrome slides on anything easily.

    Re: Frame Sliders=Good or Baaad????

can sliders bend your frame? yes. can sliders save your body work? yes. there are as many opinions as there are riders. it is like the seatbelt thing, some say that they know a guy who got in an accident and would have died if he had been wearing his seatbelt. some also know someone who would have died with out it. the question is which one is right more often. same applies to sliders. for street riding more often than not the sliders will do good. i am not a track rat so i cannot comment on the other side.

I use front shopping cart wheels mounted in the ends of the handler bars. Helps if I am close to the wall.

I went through this at the track - I bought frame sliders - took off the body work and at the last min a few people were like "frame sliders + trellis frame = bad" and I ended up riding with out em. I would really like to know what the deal is.

I have them on my track bike and had them on my previous street bike. My current street bike, a MultiStrada doesnt have them. No particular reason...just doesnt.

I am a believer in Frame Sliders. Not sure what your scoot is but AxlJax's approach reduces the chance of bending a frame!

    Re: Frame Sliders=Good or Baaad????

I'm on my third bike with sliders. The other two, I never had a get off at speed, but one at parking lot speed, and another fall over. Both times sliders saved the plastics, i did suffer on broken foot peg and one broken clutch lever.

Personally, I can understand why some people are leary of them. my logic is this. if it saves me a couple hundred dollars in plastics and/or pays for themselves in a tipover or two, then i'm good. If I ball it up in a corner, if they helped, that would be great, if not, well, i'm probably going to end up with a totaled bike anyways so doesn't really matter.

That being said, I try to avoid the cheaper ones out there. Look at the mounting positions and brackets and try to make an educated decision about what you are putting on your bike. First time I bought R&G for my 650r. Absolutely solid during my low speed down (650R does have a steel trellis frame) and no damage. Shogun on the GSXR-600, mounted solid to the frame, had to cut one side of the plastics. Woodcraft on the 848. Got a nice set with milled brackets to support the frame and help disperse some of the stress.

I use them too. If I had them for my first bike, the times i dropped it in the driveway wouldn't of scratched my plastics at all. That being said, as soon as I got this bike they were the first thing I put on it.

    Re: Frame Sliders=Good or Baaad????

Hmmm...seems that this issue is split 50/50. I personally have them on my '05 ZX6R track bike. I don't know what brand they are as I purchased the bike with them already on. However, I have Woodcrafts on my previous bike and they seemed like a good solid construction that would do the job without damaging the frame(or at least reduce the chances greatly). I might look into swapping my current ones out for those just to have piece of mind. I guess if you want sliders you should really do your homework as some work better than others as far as impact asborbtion, frame stress reduction, etc...

Many people are making the point that in a high speed crash the chances of the sliders digging in and causing the bike to flip and roll are greater but my arguement is, if you don't have sliders then something else will likely dig in, ie: handlebar, rearset, etc... and the end result will be the same. In a highspeed crash I don't think anything's gunna save your bike anyway.

Thanks for the input! Keep'em coming!

I put them on my SV (and they saved $$$ bits), and I will put them on the Versys.

Mods/admins, don't let jeff changed his name anymore. Crash4u was the best one yet.

I use Axle Jack on my Ducati ss only on the track. For me it is not about the bodywork so much as the frame and engine protection it gives. For the street, I do not often drop my bikes. Just careful I guess.

In my opinion, framesliders are a HUGE benefit. I know little about trellis frames, but if you have a GSXR, a CBR, a R1, whatever, i fully suggest frame and fork sliders, and some swingarm spool/sliders. Just pay the money and get good ones.

I went down and my slider bent but it still saved the fairing from more damage. A footpeg still broke and the bar end and brake lever got nicked.
