How much fuel is left in the hose at the pump from the previous sale?

I've tried to do some research on this and I'm getting answers of 1/3 of a gallon up to 2 gallons of fuel left in the hose, which means that when I pump one gallon of 93 octane, I may be getting 87 or some mix from whatever the previous person pumped into their vehicle.

So how much is really left in the hose that makes it into my tank???

According to the American Petroleum Institute the gas-pump hose typically retains about one third of a gallon of fuel.

As noted above, it is about a 1/3 of a gallon. Honestly, it doesn't really matter that much.

Re: How much fuel is left in the hose at the pump from the previous sale?

so my 1 gallon of 93 is only 91?

And 3 gallons of 93 would only be 92.33333333333333333333333333333 octane?

Honestly it doesn't matter if my engine knocks

It does to me when I paid for 1/3 of a gallon of mid or high octane, but got 1/3 of a gallon of 87 instead!

Well that's your fault for buying gas 1/3 of a gallon at a time.

So you figure premium is around $0.30 more per gallon or so compared to regular. You realize you are complaining about less than $.20 total cost that you may be overpaying for that 1/3 gallon of gas??

Sounds like a first world problem to me.

If $.10 is an issue than maybe driving a vehicle that requires premium gas wasn't a great idea.

How much fuel is left in the hose at the pump from the previous sale?

This reminds me of the orange juice thread from a few years back...

My next suggestion is to buy some VP race fuel instead of pump gas. If whatever engine he has is that picky that it won't run on 92.xxx octane gas, must have some pricey engine parts with high compression for performance.

That's the reason all gallons of gas are sold with a price that includes 9/10ths of a cent. They're giving you a penny for your troubles.

Oh, and the lucky fellas in CA who can only get 91 want you to cry them a river

    πR^2
    0.02295 gallons per foot of 3/4 id hose x 15 feet = 0.34gallons

the issue will be if someone pumped E15

throwing math at math, since all gas can be reasonably assumed to be e10 at this point e15 means an increase in ethanol content of 5%. Given that 10% of the .34 gallons is already ethanol (.034 total), that means you're getting an additional .017 gallons of ethanol in your tank. Lets assume a ducati-esque 3 gallon tank. With e10 - .3 gallons of ethanol, with 1/3 gallon of e15 - .317 gallons. .317 gallons in 3 gallons is 10.566%. So instead of the e10 that you're bike "should" be able to handle (according to our gov't who knows everything about what's good for us), you're getting e10.6

Of course that all assumes that e15 comes out of the same pump as e10 and I'm pretty sure its been mandated that they come from different pumps. Though I could be wrong on that.

I believe E15 is going to replace E10 in most areas, meaning they will use the same pumps and nozzles. E15 and E10 will not be different options at the same pump.

When the gas light goes on, look for a Ferrari and follow them untik they pull into a gas station and line up behind them at the pump. Problem solved.

Jeez people, you make things so complicated.

The last E15 discussion I saw was saying different pumps, and not legal for use in 06 or older vehicles IIRC. So in theory, E10 should stick around for awhile.

    This

Someone in the gov't actually got a small piece of a brain and realized that mandating e15 would at best cause everyone's warranty to immediately evaporate and at worst, cause massive amounts of damage to untold numbers of vehicles. Either way, lawsuits ensue.

Really dude? A trash can? What a waste.

I just dump it on the ground. Much easier. Less effort.

Re: How much fuel is left in the hose at the pump from the previous sale?

in reality, there is no fuel left in the line, what doesn't drain out after you click the pump siphons back

been many years since you could go to a closed gas station and drain what was left in the hoses into a can ind steal a gallon of gas from every 3 pumps
