    FZ6 Broke coolant drain bolt

So after changing the coolant to Honda Type 2 coolant, I started to torque the drain bolt with a brand new clicking type torque wrench. I noticed some coolant jump come out and as soon as I pulled the wrench away the drain bolt came out with it. It was broken in 2 with the tail still in side.

I put the bike on the side stand and put a bucket to catch the coolant.

How do I pull out the part of the drain bolt still lodged in side? I have heard of "easy out" available at Autozone
Any one know of a Yamaha dealership or store that carries Yamaha parts around Westborough ?

    Thanks all

Is there any portion of the stud sticking out of the hole? If so, you might be able to slot the top w/ a dremel. I personally find slotting rarely works; I usually cut the stud flat (if its not flat to begin with), center-punch and then proceed to the drill method.

If the stud is flush or lower, you're looking at drilling it out. You can use an ez-out, reverse drills or regular drills. Make sure you center punch. Ez-outs can be found at Sears.

[EDIT] - I believe Performance Cycles in Shrewsbury on rt 9 is a Yammy dealer.

Did you use a Harbor Freight torque wrench?

Magnet. Put it on a drill and attatch it to the part still in the hole and turn the drill on.

Called Boats.net ,PerformanceCycles and a couple of other dealerships, no one can find the exact part # for the damn Coolant drain bolt
I am thinking its probably a 6 mm bolt and anything around the same size and not too long should do the trick?

Re: FZ6 Broke coolant drain bolt

What year FZ6 and where is the coolant drain bolt?

This is a link to a FZ6 Fiche - just not sure where the drain bolt would be (doesn't look to be in the water pump).

If its just a generic looking bolt: yeah, I'd just replace it with the same size/length bolt.

Next time just remove the main tube from the water pump to drain.

Thanks, yeah I went through the fiche and so did a couple of dealerships I called, the bolt was not listed any where. It is a generic enough M6 thread size bolt, not sure about the length 1.5" I think, I will know for sure once I pull it out.
Definitely not messing with that torque wrench on the small bolts.
    Great advise fellas.

Re: FZ6 Broke coolant drain bolt

What year is it? Just looked at MrCycles at an '07, and the bolt is part number 95024-06020-00 , pretty standard $2 Yamaha bolt. You should be able to get a bolt that will work at most any hardware store if you want to go that route.

To get the rest of the bolt out, I'd just take the pump cover off. You'll probably need to get a new gasket. Taking the cover off may allow you to grab the remaining bolt with pliers to turn it out. In this case, I'd just order a new bolt and gasket from a dealer or website, along with the drain bolt gasket (little brass crush washer, part # 90430-06014-00 ).

another option is using a center punch and tapping it in a counter-clockwise direction

I ended up taking the water pump out and removing the shank by fingers/pliers. Thanks for all the good tips. I will not be using a torque wrench for this job in the future.

    sounds about right to me.

reason i ask is the shift drum bolt on the hawk has 19 ft lbs in the oem manual, which i followed. i knew it seemed high, at the time it felt high and i didn't like it but figured honda knew better than me. well i was wrong and snapped off the bolt and spent a couple hours getting it out. re-torqued it to the spec for an m6 bolt, which was IIRC, 7-9 ft lbs so sounds right to me.

Small bolts like that I just use 1/4 ratchet with one hand to tighten it. Trust your guy more.
