    Latest gamble/investment - Bought another bike ;)

over the past few years my lady and I have talked about getting an older Honda Goldwing so we can go out together and be comfortable and not be hunched over for 4 hours.

This weekend, my grandfather in law, we started looking as a joke. We stumbled across a non running Goldwing in Methuen. Looked great, lots of little oem bits etc, all in great shape. I went and looked at it, it looked great, cosmetically it was great. Mechanically i was buying it with a visible starter solenoid/main fuse issue. Hoping that was the only issue i bought it. Its a 1985 Honda Goldwing Aspencade gl1200.

Trailered it home the next day and after about 35 minutes, some shrink tube, soldering and poking and prodding, shes alive. Took her for the first test ride last night. Shes runs lovely.

Its without a doubt a whole different riding style. I dragged the shit out of my foot boards a few times and obviously the weight difference from a 2012 cbr600rr to a 1985 Honda Golwing gl1200 Aspencade.

Even came with the elusive HondaLine Aspencade cover!

It should be fun, i am excited to have something easy to ride with the wife. that's the only purpose of this. Fun to ride though man, but itll never replace my CBR

God you're an old man Jimmy. I want to rip this thing on the track.

Oh, and you'll never use all that power....or leg room.

haha, Jay its hilarious to ride, its pretty nimble...almost destroyed myself in a turn, it just falls over and goes edge to edge no problem. Ill need new floor boards by the end of the season.

Im not an old man, i just have a wife, and this is a good way to spend SOME time with her.

Goldwings never came with foot boards. Those have to be aftermarket, that's why they drag.

For the 1800 we have peg savers. http://www.pepsx.com/products.html

I know a lot of people just bolt on some 1/4" steel plate as well to keep from having to replace the boards / pegs.

Awesome. It's my ten year anniversary this June, the wife and I are talking about buying something like that and doing a few thousand miles.

Im doing this exact same thing as we speak. Im looking at a 1200 wing this weekend if i can get around to it. My only concern on the older wings is the lack of electrical power for running heaters and such. Im still not sold on a wing yet but its definately a front runner. Believe it or not my second choice is a ninja 250 and mod the hell out of it to do a cross country tour this winter. Im always thinking about gas and filling up in the middle of no where and worrying myself to death about being stuck, hence the 250 and a few msr fuel bottles. I can hardsaddle the crap out of a 250.

If you get like what i got, they have this thing called the poorboy alternator conversion..you can use a gm/chevy alternator instead of the stator..i am thinking about doing that. Especially if i am going to run aal the accessories etc (heated jackets etc etc)

you could probably convert you side bags into fuel tanks, run small pumps in the 2 gallon fuel cells or something lol. Typical gas mileage on a decent running machine is 44-50mpg. Once i get out for an entire day i will let you know i get. I run around with 2 liter of sealed fuel right now just becuase i am testing how many mpg's i can get.

I need to find someone who knows how to work on carb'd bikes and has the tools to adjust them. that is something i dont have and never really learned how to. I would love to sync all 4 carbs, rejet and clean them up.

but ultimately very happy with the bike. Did a few miles this weekend, and no issues, it was great.
Just gotta get some new rubber for it.

If you guys get goldwings let me know, i have been going through mine quit a bit and have been scouring the web for articles and info. Found some good stuff.

im still on the fence about a wing. ive heard of the poorboy conversion too. ive also seen people swapping in vw single webers and superchargers.
i too found alot of info about them on the net.
i found a good blog about a guy going cross country on an older 1200 like yours just recently. he spent alot of time in our neck of the woods. Its a good read if you can find it.
