Id rather spend ten minutes in traffic than the night in the morgue.

    Thanks anyway..

Never have, never will...I have seen far to many in down town Providence and Boston splitting traffic with inches to spare...its just a matter of when not if they become a stat.

And to add a bit more to the discussion: Would you split lanes or filter if you were riding in California?

Re: What Goes Through A Biker’s Head When You Try And Kill Him

    Sometimes.

Last summer a good part of my daily commute was congested city streets and i rode a motard, so i was constantly lane splitting, popping on and off sidewalks (nowhere near pedestrians obviously) and using any inch of real estate to get through the city traffic. On my GSXR i wouldn't ever consider riding that way in the city.

On the highway i almost never lane split. If it's a really bad traffic jam and there's plenty of room, then i'll do it, but that's rare. If i'm seriously speeding and happen to pass a cop and it's too late to slow down, then it's time for triple digit lane splitting. Beyond those rare situations, i avoid it.

If traffic is barely moving I'll do it but that's about it.

I habe done it before, albeit very cautiously...

But I think the main topic should be what's with the dumbfuck thread title?

Quick question, I know splitting isn't legal in MA, but is cutting in front of traffic at a stop light legal? Or is that the same as lane splitting?

That would be the title of the article I linked to.

It's the title of the article the OP posted, which was the inspiration for the thread.

I would considered that lane splitting.

When I lived in CA (for 12 years) I would split lanes very frequently. For the most part it's legal and most cagers accept the fact that it doesn't slow them down at all.

In the 16 years since that I've lived in Boston, I've only split lanes 2 or 3 times. Way too dangerous with these drivers.

Lane splitting in staes like Cali or expected, so most drivers are aware and expect it, so would i do it there. Sure.... (from what i gather from folks)

But do I do it. NO way in hell, not with these morons. Most people here have no Fn clue where they are going anyways....

Re: What Goes Through A Biker’s Head When You Try And Kill Him

I used to commute New Bedford to Haverhill through Boston on 93. The traffic backed up from the bridge to 24 everyday and moved very slow. When I took the DRZ to work I would regularly split on 93 when it was stop and go. Though I went very slow, maybe 10 or 15mph I just kept it moving when the traffic stopped and picked a land when it started moving again. I didn't feel in any sort of danger. But, I did often see other bikes running down the brake-down land and through lanes at 45+ which I thought was crazy.

I spent 23 years riding in SoCal, where it's legal, and I lanesplit literally almost every day. I've lanesplit over 40K miles in my life so far.
I don't do it where it's illegal, because tickets suck. It should be legal everywhere, though. The one single area of life where CA is a leader in freedom.

This. All my street bikes have been air cooled with the exception of one. I put-put along to keep some air moving over the motor.

I am with you. I save 30 minutes on my commute by going from the 90/93 intersection down to exit 15 off 93. Traffic is halted in that bottleneck.

I ride in the shoulder going from 93 south to storrow, thats really the only spot. Its a very wide shoulder, but nobody is even remotely expecting it so I've had a few close calls. Saves 15 minutes on really bad days.

Re: What Goes Through A Biker’s Head When You Try And Kill Him

I'll split if I'm in a group and theres someone else in front lol, this is good as it makes people aware of the splitting going on so they won't accidentally hit me (if anything the person in front). It is however bad as it makes angry people aware of the splitting going on so they can intentionally swerve into your path, open doors, etc.

Last time I did it I was going from Lowell to Hampton beach on a real hot day and sitting in traffic was just not going to happen. Some people gave thumbs up, others attempted murder to prevent it.

There was one spot where a driver successfully blocked the lane almost knocking my buddy off his bike by pulling on top of the line.

I've only ever been fully knocked off the road while I was obeying all laws in Rhode Island, I saw the person in the lane to my right moving over and had no where to go, horn didn't work, slowed down as best I could but the person behind me was not paying attention either, and was real close to me. I choose the grass. Bike stayed upright...

Hell, I've had drivers come after me for less than that. People are fucking tapped.

I would get maybe 3 or 4 people a month who would crowd the line and try to keep me from getting past them, but I'd just take another route. Only got two people in 23 years who actually tried to cause me harm when lanesplitting. And about the same for road-ragers when I wasn't lanesplitting, so that's a wash there.
